Out on DVD this week:

1) United 93 – RENT: After seeing Stone’s godawful rendition of 9/11, any other version’s gotta at least be worth a rental.

2) Kinky Boots – PASS: Niether kinky, nor funny. This is the tale of a horribly mismarketed British import.

3) Jackass: The Movie – Unrated: BUY – If you don’t yet own a copy, this is the one to buy. If you already do, however, then there simply isn’t enough new material to persuade you otherwise.

4) District B13 – RENT: If you’re a little upset that you haven’t seen a really cool Jackie Chan/Jet Li flick in a long time, this French actioneer from producer Luc Besson will absoultely blow your mind.

Also out this week are reissues of “Brazil,” “Blade Runner” and “Ace Venture,” as well as new TV season releases of “Lost,” “Oz,” “Supernatural” and “Hustle.”

Rapid Fire Rejects, Volume IX

Love Comes to the Executioner
Darkly comical and featuring an interesting concept about a recent college graduate who takes up a job as The Closer at the local penitentiary where his older brother is on death row, the film still fails on multiple levels. The acting is horrible (with the lead actor doing his best Chris Klein impression) and the ending is a little too convenient.

The Zodiac
The epilogue to this direct-to-DVD feature about the infamous Zodiac Killer states that the killer’s last correspondence with police (in 1978) mentioned his desire to see a good movie made about him. Unfortunately, this isn’t it. Perhaps the big-budget version due out in early 2007 will fare better. Then again, it’s not like this story hasn’t been done before.

The Plague
Wanna prevent yourself from accidentally renting this movie the next time you’re browsing the “new releases” section at the video store? No problem. Just follow my foolproof plan to success. Step one: Find “The Plague” on DVD. Step two: Look at DVD and continue walking. Step three: Pick up “Village of the Damned” on DVD. Step four: Go to the checkout counter, pay for movie, go home and enjoy said DVD. Congratulations, you’ve just saved 90 minutes of your life.

Bottom’s Up
While it’s nice to see Jason Mewes working again, it’s a shame that he has to do so opposite Paris Hilton. The media queen is a horrible actress, and though she provides some nice eye candy every now and then, she just doesn’t cut it as a brunette.

New on DVD this week:

1) LOTR Trilogy: Limited Editions – BUY: Complete with a brand-new documentary by Costa Boates, I say that this is a definite must-buy. Owners of the previously-released extended cut of the film might say otherwise.

2) The Sentinel – RENT: It’s not good, but fans of the genre might enjoy it on a rainy night.

3) Friends with Money – RENT: Jennifer Aniston is at her absolute best when she’s playing the plain Jane loser.

4) Take the Lead – PASS: It’s like “Sister Act,” but with dancing.

Also out this week are a reissues of ’80s classics like “Pretty in Pink” and “Some Kind of Wonderful,” new TV season sets of “Arrested Development,” “South Park,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Will & Grace” and “Desperate Houswives,” as well as “The Chuck Norris American Hero Collection” and a “Romancing the Stone”/”Jewel of the Nile” double pack.

Another beloved Disney character to be ruined

Because Disney can’t seem to create enough original characters these days (they’d apparently rather leave that to the folks at Pixar), they’re once again trotting back to the Disney Vault and recycling a pre-existing one: Tinkerbell. They’re going to make a straight-to-video Tinkerbell movie, and, for the first time in Disney’s history, they’re going to give our girl Tink a voice…and it belongs to Brittany Murphy.

I gotta tell you, Tinkerbell’s reputation really went downhill when Disney merchandised her to places like Hot Topic, who’ve put her on hot pants and lace tops. It’s, like, “Hey, kids, Tink’s a slut now! Wait ’til you see what we’re doing with our revamp of Snow White; let’s just say you’ll be pretty sure she ought not to be wearing white anymore! Wink, wink, nudge, nudge…!”

Out on DVD this week:

1) Scary Movie 4 – PASS: By far the weakest of the horror spoof franchise, if you have to see this installment, then see it for the excellent slapstick performance by Craig Bierko.

2) RV – PASS: Three words: Big rolling turd.

3) Hoot – RENT: There’s nothing particularly outstanding about this environmentally-sensitive film, but it’s worth picking up for your kid to watch on a rainy day.

4) Apocalypse Now: The Complete Dossier – BUY: One of the greatest war flicks ever made, the new DVD features both the theatrical and extended (“Redux”) cut, and also includes hours of new bonus material.

Also out on DVD this week is the 1998 Sundance hit, “Safe Men,” and new TV season releases of “The Simpsons,” “Rome,” “Sealab 2021,” “Full House,” “Hogan’s Heroes,” “3rd Rock From the Sun” and “The Weird Al Show.”
