Shoulda been STV

Even Leslie Nielsen knew when to stop making movies for the theatres. So it should have been for Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector. All the trailers make it look like this is one flick for the 3rd grade crowd. Fart jokes! “Ball” jokes! Sushi jokes! Larry in drag! Booby jokes! A big, huge truck! Kid Rock! Unattractive women jokes!

Now, before it sounds like I’m trying to be above all this (like say the folks at PopMatters), let me just say that is not the case. This is just one of those flicks that boggles the mind as to how it got a major release. Sure, we’re still in that “dead of winter” part of the movie year, but…still…Larry The Cable Guy? Christ, not even Jeff Foxworthy had a movie, did he? If he did, I’m sorry for any of you who saw it. Hey Meds, you don’t have to go see this one, do you?

Remaking Hollywood

For those of you still wondering why the box office has been rapidly declining over the years, it’s because of weekends like this. Three new films open on Friday, two of which are remakes, and the other which might as well be. The reimagining of Wes Craven’s classic 70’s horror flick “The Hills Have Eyes” probably has the best shot at topping the box office, but it’s hard to count out a kid’s movie (“The Shaggy Dog”) and a romantic comedy (“Failure to Launch“), both of which have equal ability to upset the always financially successful horror genre.

I don’t want to say this is creepy…

…but the fellow in this photo is the guy who runs “the world’s greatest Amanda Bynes fansite.”

All I’m saying is that, in my head, I imagined that the person who’d run such a site would be a woman in her late teens or early ’20s, not a guy with grey in his beard and a deer-in-headlights expression who looks like he’s literally soiling himself with excitement.

The cowboys are fine, but where has all my money gone?

To a little piggy bank in Box Office Heaven we like to call February. Four new candidates to rape you of your hard earned cash this week, including the romantic comedy spoof “Date Movie,” a movie that is apparently so bad that it wasn’t even screened for critics, the kidnapping thriller “Freedomland” that might as well have been called “The Forgotten 2: We Forgot We Already Made This Movie,” and the Disney based-on-true-events snow dog film, “Eight Below.” Sigh. The one glimmering hope of entertainment this weekend is in the semi-limited release of “Night Watch,” the first part of a Russian fantasy film that’s being hailed as Eastern Europe’s “Lord of the Rings.” A pretty hefty statement, but one that I’m excited to see nonetheless.

Because “Nights of Lightning” wasn’t as catchy

Let me begin by saying that I don’t blame Will Ferrell. One minute he was a nobody, the next a comedic breakout. If I were in that same position I would have probably signed up for “Kicking & Screaming” and “Bewitched” too. That doesn’t, however, excuse him from appearing in shitty movies for the rest of his career, so it’s a pleasure to see him finally getting back on track. His newest film, “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” is a comedy about a NASCAR superstar whose position in the sport is challenged when a French newcomer arrives. The first trailer just hit the Internets late tonight, so be sure to check it out here.

A quick note: While the trailer doesn’t make any mention of this, Ferrell is teammates with another driver played by John C. McGinley. The driving duo also go by the nicknames “Thunder” and “Lightning.” If that’s not enough to make you want to see this film, the trailer certainly will.
