Rapid Fire Rejects, Volume VI

Doogal
This animated film based on the popular children’s novel is the biggest waste of time you’ll ever come across on DVD, and while it boasts a respectable voice cast led by Jon Stewart as the evil wizard Zeebad, I wouldn’t wish this garbage on even the most infantile of viewers. Case in point: my DVD player has never experienced a shorter spin.

Dirty Dozen: Double Feature
You won’t find the classic original film anywhere on this two-disc set, but rather the second (“The Deadly Mission”) and third (“The Fatal Mission”) made-for-TV sequels starring Telly Savalas. I could go on and on about how bad these movies really are, but if you’ve ever seen the first sequel (“The Next Mission”), then you know exactly what to expect.

Aquamarine
The “Splash”-esque teen comedy gets worse the longer you watch it, and you could even color yourself heroic for doing so. I actually managed to sit through the first twenty minutes before finally turning it off. The reason? Bad acting and a ruthless script filled with lines like “you scared the salt out of me.” Oh, and I was finished with dinner, too.

Room 6
Hollywood orphans Christine Taylor and Jerry O’Connell star in this shoddy direct-to-DVD horror flick about a haunted hospital and its staff of vampire lesbian nurses. The film gets more ridiculous with each passing minute, and though the opening sequence could be considered at least a little creepy, the ending is like a stroll through your local haunted house.

Candy Stripers
Small town invaded by aliens. Aliens possess sexy candy stripers. Candy stripers hunt men to use for breeding. Dopey guy saves the day. The end.

Sorry, Sam, but “Slither” beat you to the punch

Everybody here at Premium Hollywood has had their say about the upcoming release of Sam Jackson’s “Snakes on a Plane,” including me, but with this weekend’s release of the James Gunn horror-comedy “Slither,” it looks like “SoaP” can no longer be called the next great cult film. It isn’t just the audiences that are loving it either. The film currently has an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (out of 65 reviews). “Slither” is everything that fanboys could only hope “SoaP” is, but with five more months to wait until it’s theatrical release, you might as well check out “Slither” in the meantime.

Also out this week: two horrible sequels (“Ice Age 2” and “Basic Instinct 2“), as well as a yet another urban rap drama (“ATL”). Seriously, how many more of these shitty movies are they going to make?

Remaking Hollywood

For those of you still wondering why the box office has been rapidly declining over the years, it’s because of weekends like this. Three new films open on Friday, two of which are remakes, and the other which might as well be. The reimagining of Wes Craven’s classic 70’s horror flick “The Hills Have Eyes” probably has the best shot at topping the box office, but it’s hard to count out a kid’s movie (“The Shaggy Dog”) and a romantic comedy (“Failure to Launch“), both of which have equal ability to upset the always financially successful horror genre.

Is it worth it, or is it sheer laziness?

I don’t get it. Old horror flick after old horror flick is being remade like crazy anymore Up next for a March 10 release is The Hills Have Eyes. Is it just me, or is anyone else tired of being served reheated nostalgia? Now, sometimes I do like the results as in the excellent (and much better) remake of “Dawn of the Dead.” But for the most part, I couldn’t care less. Not for “The Amityville Horror,” not for “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” not for “Psycho,” and certainly not for this one. Seems like I read where yet another oldie is getting remade soon, but I can’t recall what it is at the moment. So my question is has the horror genre dipped to such new lows that it’s easier to make a quickie remake of a classic than to come up with something new? If it isn’t that, then we’re off remaking J-horror flicks that don’t capture my interest, either (“The Grudge” was one huge piece of poo). I know there are folks here who have really enjoyed the two “Saw” flicks, so there is that, but still, there could be more.
