Spider-Man Vs. Spider-Man!

Which Spider-Man do you prefer, the classic original American version, or the tricked-out Japanese model? Let’s take a look at both, won’t you?

Here’s the American ’70s Spidey. I remember watching this show and thinking that the eyes on the mask were just completely wrong. And of course, that opening theme is totally marred by the sleazy sax line over the funky disco groove. Still, as you can see, this Spidey is true to the origin and overall tale. Nicholas Hammond, as you may recall, was in The Sound of Music as well as being in the infamous “Brady Bunch” episode, “The Subject Was Noses.” I also recall his part in “The Martian Chronicles.” He’s done a lot of b-list TV work since the heady days of Spidey.

And here we have Japan’s late-’70s Spidey. That theme kicks ass! How could you not have “Hey, hey, hey…WOW!” stuck in your head for hours after hearing it? I don’t know how true to the original Spidey this is. It looks like the Peter Parker character likes to ride around on a motorcycle. But then…what’s with that huge robot?!! Ah, the Japanese and their love for giant mechs. Also giant is Spidey’s web shooter. Man, that thing looks like it weighs about three pounds.

So there you have it…Classic American Spidey or motorcycle ridin’, giant robot befriending Japanese Spidey? You decide!

Move over, Lohan, my new It Girl is…

Chelsea Handler!

Take that, Linz! Chelsea Handler has now moved into my It Girl residence. Her weekly adventures on “The Chelsea Handler Show” on E! brighten every Friday night for me. I wasn’t aware, though, that she is also part of “Girls Behaving Badly,” which isn’t one of my fave shows. But on her own, damned funny. If you haven’t seen the show, be sure to tune in. Who couldn’t love Li’l Nugget?!

“Happy Hour” is gone

And I didn’t even get to see it! Wait, I didn’t even know it was a new show till I heard the news myself. So now you know, too…yes, “Happy Hour,” another FOX network show has met its demise. Didn’t take too long, either. One episode? Brilliant But Cancelled is running a contest with all the new shows for this season lined up on a deathwatch sort of thing. Place your bets on which show will be axed next! I’m thinking they have to put “Heroes” on there eventually.

Cola Wars

Back in the ’80s, the great corporations known as Coca-Cola and Pepsi were waging all out war on each other on the TV through various commercials. It was a simpler time, when the Cold War was still jacked up and we were all just saying No to illicit substances while saying yes to Big Mac Attacks. In the spirit of looking back to those good old days, here are a few cola war battles for your consideration. Was Pepsi truly better at the time simply because Coke fumbled with their new formula? It’s hard to say. But how about a can of 7UP Gold?

Max Headroom vs. Michael Jackson The King of AI Max Headroom instructs us to “Catch The Wave” while Michael Jackson tells us “You’re the Pepsi Generation” and that we should “feel the Pepsi way.” Unfortunately for Max, he was touting the New Coke. Frankly, I recall not hating New Coke at all. Is there any for sale on eBay that I could enjoy once again?

“Coke Is It!” vs. “Pepsi. The Choice of a New Generation.” Before the great New Coke debacle, Coca-Cola was riding high with their energetic and cheeseball “Coke Is It!” promotion. This damn jingle still runs through my head on occasion. On the other hand, we have Michael J. Fox, also riding high at the time, in a library with no change for the Pepsi machine. But then, a little magic happens with that Xerox machine. Look out! It’s interesting to note how Pepsi was really trying to click with those crazy kids again and all their “New Generation” hype. Nowadays it’s all about Red Bull, AMP, and Full Throttle, baby!

“Just for the Taste of It” vs. “Burger King” While Coke was beating the hell out of everyone with their “Just for the Taste of It!” Diet Coke ads, Burger King wanted you to know that they had recently aligned with Pepsi. Take that, Coke! And who better to share this great news than Andrew McCarthy and Elisabeth Shue all dressed up in Pepsi and BK attire? Man, I miss those BK uniforms!
