Farm animals, Marines offer a helping hand

In what’s been an already disappointing year for the movie industry, the Holiday season will have a lot of catching up to do to turn this box office train wreck around. That being said, it looks like it may just get a helping hand in the first week of November with the release of the Gulf War drama “Jarhead” and the Disney animated film “Chicken Little.” Both movies should prove to do very well amongst their respective audiences, with positive reviews pouring in every day, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see “Saw 2” in the number one spot again after all of the positive buzz it’s received.

Now that’s bloody cool

With the recent theatrical release of “Saw 2,” it seems only necessary that a Special Edition DVD of the original movie would make its way into stores, but the new single-disc release is actually one of the better double dips I’ve seen in a while. Not only does it feature tons more special features than the original disc (a key component in using the “special” title), but it also boasts one of the coolest DVD covers in the history of the medium. Packaged in a slim digipack case, the front cover has an additional layer with fake blood that moves around, and a tiny little buzz saw that spins as well.

Dear Fox, I hate you

We’ve all had our gripes about network doofus Fox in the past, whether it was the cancellation of our favorite shows (i.e. “Family Guy,” “Firefly”) or the mistreatment of others (i.e. “Arrested Development”). Still, Fox has done a few things right, hasn’t it? “24” is a blockbuster hit. So much so, apparently, that the network is willing to bump the final nine episodes of the equally successful “Prison Break” in order to begin the fifth season of “24” in timely fashion. Are these guys complete idiots or what? “Prison Break” premieres with great ratings, only to disappear for a month in order to make room for the MLB playoffs. It then returns in late October for about five more weeks before taking another break – this time for Christmas/New Year’s Eve.

Why does Fox choose to continually shoot itself in the foot every season? And why can’t the remaining episodes of “Prison Break” air either before or after “24”? There can’t be anything better to vie for the spot, and “Prison Break” represents the most similar programming the network has to fans of “24.” It all makes sense. Then again, that’s what got Fox into all this trouble in the first place. Note to the Fox executives: fire yourselves and hire people that know a thing or two about running a television station. Sigh.

The next Han Solo?

Recently, Entertainment Weekly ran an article comparing the big screen introduction of “Serenity” star Nathan Fillion to that of Harrison Ford during his “Star Wars” days. What’s upsetting about the piece is that the magazine is merely theorizing that the characters of Han Solo and Malcolm Reynolds are similar, and not the two actors. While Nathan Fillion is certainly a good enough actor to reach star status (he’s even got a new horror film with Universal coming out in March 2006), he probably won’t make it for a few more years, and most certainly not playing his old “Firefly” character since the poor box office numbers have likely killed any chance of a sequel to “Serenity” or a TV rebirth. Still, since when has gauging an actor’s future by one role ever worked? Solo and Reynolds are nothing alike, and neither is Fillion and Ford, so just drop it EW, okay?

Lost… and found (in translation)

It’s a real shame that Korean castaways Jin and Sun aren’t more interesting characters, because this week’s flashback episode had to be the worst yet. Despite the look back at the couple’s individual lives before the two met, the audience didn’t learn anything that we didn’t already know. Jin got fired from a job as a doorman and Sun was dumped by a potential suitor. So what? Surely something more exciting has to be happening to them now that they’ve become stranded on a mysteriously island. Nope. Sun just walks the beaches looking for her lost wedding ring while Jin shows off his mad fishing skills to the newest survivors on the other side of the island.

We were teased with the possibility of a little action when Michael suddenly ran off to search for Walt, but all that really happened was a little getting-to-know-you session between Jin and some crazy African castaway who calls himself Mr. Echo. Is this guy in a rock band back home or what? This guy is “Lord of Flies” crazy through and through, but he could be a serious asset to the A-Team back on Plane Crash Beach. And if nothing else, at least Locke would finally have someone to talk to.

Meanwhile, Sawyer and the rest of the new survivors begin the trek back to Plane Crash Beach when they hear the Others mucking around in their backyard, but no one really has no idea where they’re even going. And this poses an interesting question. Why haven’t these castaways attempted a journey like this before? It’s not like they’ve been held up by anything important, save for the production of a creepy prisoner pit and a few nifty weapons. And what ever happened to a little R&R and a round of golf? I’m bored, can we please get Hurley a fresh set of batteries? Watching him listen to his CD player was more exciting than this. Oh, wait! Someone’s going to die? And we have to wait three weeks? The suspense! The suspense! But let’s not forget, there’s a fresh group of red shirts just waiting their turn for a little small screen glory. There’s no way another major cast member is biting the bullet this early into the second season, and you know it.
