As the countdown continues to my departure for Los Angeles and the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, the most recent schedule for the event has emerged, and there’ve been a few changes and several adjustments. I won’t waste your time running through the entire list again, but here are some of the new additions that caught my eye:
The Hallmark Channel: There will be a panel which focuses on the four new films set to premiere in the next few months. There’s “Claire,” starring Valerie Bertinelli, who stars as a suburban soccer mom who reluctantly uses her clairvoyant powers to solve a cold case in which a serial murdered threatens to strike again. (Awesome.) Then there’s “Murder 101: If Wishes Were Horses,” a mystery movie which stars three generations of the Van Dyke family: Shane, Barry, and Dick. “Final Approach” is a three-hour mega-movie about a terror plot at the World Bank which somehow ties into an airplane that’s flying at 40,000 feet…but all you need to know is that Dean Cain, Anthony Michael Hall, Lea Thompson, and Ernie Hudson are in it. And, lastly, there’s “A Grandpa for Christmas,” starring Ernest Borgnine. C’mon, who doesn’t love Ernest Borgnine…?!?
HBO: A panel has been added for the network’s new documentary, “Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq,” which, in addition to including several of the US soldiers featured in the hour-long look at those wounded in the war thus far, will also feature the documentary’s narrator, James Gandolfini.
CMT: The panel for “Ty Murray’s Celebrity Bull-Riding Challenge” has been updated, and it now includes a couple of the contestants. Now appearing will be Rocket Ismail, Jonny Fairplay, and Francisco Quinn, but, inevitably, I’m most interested in seeing Vanilla Ice.
TV Land: The “Elvis Presley Month” panel has been announced. Having gotten past my depression that it doesn’t include Ann Margaret, I’m pleased to see that it does include Joe Esposito, one of the members of the Memphis Mafia, as well as another one of the King’s pals, Jerry Shilling. Also on the bill are Pamela Keogh, an…or perhaps the…authorized biographer of the Elvis Presley estate, as well as actress Sue Anne Langdon, who co-starred with Elvis in “Frankie and Johnny.”
VH-1 Classic: There’s a panel for the network’s new documentary series, “Seven Ages of Rock,” which will include original MTV VJ Mark Goodman, as well as Steven Van Zandt. I know, I really should’ve led with Little Steven, but, c’mon, Mark Goodman? He’s almost as good as Alan Hunter!
BBC America: Added to their line-up is a panel for “Hotel Babylon,” which will feature actor Max Beesley.
E! Network: Chelsea Handler will be on hand to promote her new series, “Chelsea Lately.”
The Style Network: Okay, so I don’t know the first thing about The Style Network. I don’t even know if my cable provider OFFERS The Style Network, frankly. Despite this, Kimora Lee Stevens will still be on hand to push her new series, “Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane.”
Disney Channel: I also don’t really care much about this one, either, but Disney will be airing a documentary about two high schools teaming up to stage a version of “High School Musical,” and the key members of the film will be on hand.
Game Show Network: The panel for “Grand Slam” has added a pop culture footnote to its attendees list: “Jeopardy!” champion Ken Jennings. Also included is Thom McKee, the top “Tic Tac Dough” winner, who must not have nearly as impressive a publicist as Jennings does. (I mean, have you ever heard of him?)
CNN: Panels have been added for the news network’s new documentaries, “God’s Warriors,” which will include Christiane Amanpour, and “Planet in Peril,” which includes Anderson Cooper and Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
Court TV: Get ready, kids: Star Jones Reynolds will be in the house! (She’s got a new talk show.)
TBS: We already knew there’d be a panel for “The Bill Engvall Show,” but in addition to Engvall himself, other cast members who’ll be in attendance are Nancy Travis and Tim Meadows.
TNT: Okay, here are two panels I’m really psyched about. The first is for “Saving Grace,” the Holly Hunter drama; Hunter will be on hand, as will her co-stars Laura San Giacomo and Bokeem Woodbine. The second, however, is the one that’ll really turn heads; it’s for the new Ridley Scott mini-series, “The Company,” and not only will Scott himself be there, but so will several of the stars, including Chris O’Donnell, Michael Keaton, and Alfred Molina. Wow, Batman, Robin, and Doc Ock?!? SWEET!
The History Channel: There’s a new special – “1968 with Tom Brokaw” – and Brokaw himself will be on hand.
USA: A panel for the new series, “In Plain Sight,” featuring Mary McCormack, Lesley Ann Warren, and Fred Weller.
Sci-Fi: “Flash Gordon” panel. Awesome. ‘Nuff said.
Bravo: Tim Gunn will be promoting “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style.” That seems appropriate.
NBC: This one’s pretty sweet. They’ve added a “Thursday Night Comedies” panel, which will include Greg Daniels (executive producer of “The Office”), Bill Lawrence (executive producer of “Scrubs”), and Greg Garcia (executive producer / creator of “My Name is Earl”), plus Tina Fey (“30 Rock”), Jason Lee (“My Name Is Earl”), and yet-to-be-determined stars of “The Office” and “Scrubs.” (Clearly, we know which stars we’d like to see from each of those shows, but we’re not holding our breath.) Oh, and they’ve also added a panel for “The Singing Bee,” so get ready for up-close-and-personal conversation with Joey Fatone!
ABC: They’ve added a panel for the returning “Men in Trees,” featuring Anne Heche.
