“Harper’s Island,” meet “Kings.”

You two kids have a lot in common, most notably the fact that your respective networks shuffled both of you off to Saturday nights to die. Now, granted, while NBC moved “Kings” in order to begin the process of dismissing one of its biggest ratings failures in recent memory, at least CBS had the common decency to try and put a positive spin on the night-switch for “Harper’s Island.”

Not that they necessarily succeeded, mind you.

“The preliminary DVR and online streaming data suggest a passionate audience for ‘Harper’s’ outside its current Thursday time period borders,” said Kelly Kahl, Senior Executive Vice President Prime Time, CBS Television, in a press release issued today by the network. “This move gives us an opportunity to improve the time period on Thursday while experimenting with more original programming on Saturday, and continuing to serve an audience that is clearly engaged in the ongoing ‘Harper’s’ story.”

Gosh, that sounded really nice up until the second sentence, where they essentially said, “Surely we’ve got something that’ll get better ratings in the Thursday 10 PM timeslot than ‘Harper’s Island.'”

Starting May 2, “Harper’s Island” moves to Saturdays at 9 PM. Set your TiVos and DVRs accordingly.

The Spectacular Spider-Man: Volume Four

Sony’s decision to break up the first season of “The Spectacular Spider-Man” into volumes may be a hard one to swallow, but at least they haven’t wasted any time in releasing them on DVD. While the last two sets were definitely an improvement over the slightly disappointing “Return of the Lizard” trilogy, Volume Four ups the ante yet again by expanding the universe to include even more things we loved about the comics. For starters, it marks the debut of the popular alien symbiote and black suit storyline (which also includes a cool flashback to Spider-Man’s origin), and perhaps more importantly, the entrance of fan favorite Venom into the fold. Those who feel like the comics went downhill after the introduction of Venom, however, will be pleased to discover that the writers have included a few classic stories as well including a team-up episode with Black Cat and the inevitable formation of the Sinister Six (the vintage line-up featuring Doc Ock, Sandman, Rhino, Electro, Vulture and Shocker). The show only gets better with every episode, and though it would be nice to be able to watch more than just a few at a time, we’ll take what we can get.

Prison Break 4.18: “Vs.”

The “Prison Break” writers are blowing my mind with these episode titles. Last week, the episode was called “The Mother Lode” and focused on Mama Scofield, and this week “Vs.” implies how Lincoln and Michael are pitted against each other with regard to Scylla and taking down the Company. However, the episode title has a double meaning, since the last fifteen minutes were about heading off Victor Sandusky (V.S., get it?) at the airport. Consider your mind blown.

The “B” story this week revolved around Dr. Sara Tancredi’s reaction when she discovers that she’s pregnant. Seriously, this woman is a doctor and she’s surprised that she’s preggers after knocking boots with Michael? The only way that I’d buy her shock would be if we somehow knew that the couple was using birth control, but how do you shoehorn that into an episode of “Prison Break”?

“You’re still on the pill, right?”

Obviously, Sara is going to be reluctant to tell Michael about the pregnancy because he might snap into father mode and try to protect her from everything (and not let her help him). But the truth is that she has someone else to think about now, so she should really be avoiding any situations where a gun is pointed at her or bullets are whizzing around her head. And that means she should abandon her quest to take down the Company.

But back to the Brothers. I find this whole rivalry pretty silly. Lincoln claims that he “just wants his life back,” so he’s willing to turn over Scylla (and all of the incredible world-changing information it contains) over to the General. In effect, he’s throwing away the solution to unlimited, renewable energy (and the climate crisis) so that he, Sofia and LJ can go bowling in peace. (And this assumes that the General would even let Linc go once he has Scylla.) He’s literally putting his own needs ahead of those of the 6.7 billion people that inhabit the planet. That, my friends, is some seriously manufactured conflict.

The writers needed some hook for the last few episodes, and that’s what they decided to go with. No wonder the show’s ratings have fallen off a cliff this season. (Hey, it’s the third most pirated show, so there’s that.)

A Chat with “Harper’s Island” Victim #4

Another week, another victim on “Harper’s Island.” As usual, we won’t spoil the person’s identity for those who haven’t watched the episode yet, but, man, you should’ve seen the look on their face right before they got what was coming to them. And if you didn’t see it…well, it’s a little late now. (You’ll have to watch the episode to understand why that’s funny.)

Let’s head on over to the interview, shall we…?

TV Roundup: Shorter seasons for “Heroes,” ABC shows in limbo and more

– NBC wants shorter seasons from “Heroes,” according to AdAge.com. The network is looking for 18 to 20 episodes instead of the usual 25, with fewer in-season breaks. I’m all for shorter seasons, as shorter usually equals better.

– ABC has renewed “Lost,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” — no surprises there — “Brothers & Sisters,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Ugly Betty” and “Private Practice,” but “Cupid,” “Better Off Ted,” “Castle,” “Scrubs,” “Samantha Who?” and “The Unusuals” are still in limbo. TV.com thinks that “Castle” has the best chance of surviving.

Television Without Pity lists 10 series that deserve a movie before “CSI.”

Yahoo TV highlights 16 season finales that are coming up over the next five weeks.
