As far as the winners are concerned, the British Academy Film Awards are just as important as all those other guys, and may even carry as much influence as the US-produced Golden Globes and Academy Awards.
This year’s ceremony aired tonight with little dazzle, but it did deliver quite a few upsets, including Alan Arkin for Best Supporting Actor (though to be fair, Eddie Murphy wasn’t even nominated), Paul Greengrass for Best Director, and “Happy Feet” for Best Animated Feature. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night, however, came when Stephen Fears’ “The Queen” went home with top honors.
The best moment of the night? Ricky Gervais’ presentation of Best Animated Film. After opening the envelope, Gervais shouted out in disappointment “And the BAFTA goes to… Helen Mirren? This is getting ridiculous” before finally announcing the real winner.
