Who doesn’t enjoy a good TV show cast reunion…?

And this is one of the best-remembered shows of the ’80s…if only as the perfect example of the decade’s excess: “Dynasty.”

The biggest names in the cast are all really getting up there in age – Linda Evans (Krystle Carrington) is 63, Joan Collins (Alexis Morell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan, to be precise) is 72, and family patriarch John Forsythe (Blake Carrington) is 88 – but all of them turned out for the soon-to-be-aired program, Dynasty Reunion: Catfights and Caviar, airing on May 2nd on CBS…which will feel a bit odd, since the original series was on ABC.

Collins clearly still maintains the same demeanor that the tabloids always said she had back then. During the taping of the special, she was heard to say, “Can I ask everyone behind the camera to be absolutely still?” (Later, she clarified, “Even if someone puts their hand in their pocket, it distracts me.”)

But in case you think the gathering of the show’s stars was something the actors and actresses did out of the kindness of their heart, think again; Gordon Thomson, who played Adam, originally turned down the offer to appear because of the low salary he was being offered…but then, I dunno, I guess he realized that the amount was easily comparable to the time he’d be off the schedule at Taco Bell and then figured, “What the hell.” (To be fair, Thomson will be appearing in this summer’s “Poseidon”…but, still, it’s not like he’s really working that much these days that he should be so greedy…or, then, maybe that’s why he is.)

DVD shuffle: 04/25/06

Out on DVD this week:

1) Aeon Flux – PASS: When a studio doesn’t want a new film to be reviewed the weekend of its release, they’ll typically screen it for critics on Thursday at 7:00. This movie was screened at 10:00. Any questions?

2) Casanova – RENT: Billed as a comedy, I don’t remember laughing a single time throughout the length of this period piece. Then again, resident BE critic David Medsker loved it, so I have to imagine someone else will too.

3) Shopgirl – PASS: Disappointment doesn’t even begin to explain my feelings for this film, but if you must see it because you read the book, then don’t say I didn’t warn you.

4) Match Point – RENT: I haven’t had a chance to see this one yet, but if the award buzz is any indication, this is one to definitely check out. The lack of any special features turns off to a purchase, however, no matter how good the film is.

5) Tristan + Isolde – PASS: Do you really need a reason not to see this movie?

Also out this week are quite a few special editions, including new releases for “The Wedding Singer,” “The Patriot,” “Windtalkers” and “The Replacement Killers,” as well as the first season of “American Dad” and the Final Fantasy VII film “Advent Children.”

Is it just me…

…or is it true that Anna Paquin would have made a better Penny Lane? I recently watched “Almost Famous” for maybe the third or fourth time and, while it’s true that Kate Hudson was at her very best in the role, that isn’t saying a whole hell of a lot. Looking at her body of work, it’s pretty sad that “The Skeleton Key” and “About Adam” are her next two highest rated movies.

Instead, imagine Anna Paquin, who played Polexia Aphrodisia in the film, in the role of Penny Lane. Paquin has since proved in “25th Hour,” “The Squid and the Whale” and “Buffalo Soldiers,” that she can play the role of young seductress quite well. She even added a level of sexiness to both X-Men movies, and she has more depth in her little finger than Hudson does in her entire body.

Is this just a blonde/brunette thing?

“Psst! Want to make our exes REALLY jealous?”

richierichards

In the latest example of Hollywood being just a little too much like high school, two more celebrities have paired off in a hookup clearly designed to rankle their exes: Denise Richards has apparently taken a shine to Richie Sambora, at least when cameras are present.

As many will recall, Richards’s ex Charlie Sheen starred with Sambora’s ex Heather Locklear in TV’s “Spin City for two seasons. Locklear and Richards are also reportedly close friends–or at least were until this photo was taken.

So, if this ill-fated union actually lasts…will we get to call the new twosome “Richie Richards?”

At least she’s not still pregnant…

I’m not entirely sure why I’m still watching “Alias,” but Sydney finally delivered her baby last week. Considering that her pregnancy pretty much ruined the show, it’s a relief to finally have it over with. I was afraid that they would drag it out for a few more episodes, but maybe now she can get back to some real spy work now without looking completely foolish.

It was also great to see Irina again, and if there’s a better looking fiftysomething actress than Lena Olin, I’d like to meet her.

Help! My hand is glued to this wall!
