Bill Paxton is up for a “Twister” sequel. Anyone else?
In an interview with Bullz-Eye in conjunction with the season premiere of HBO’s “Big Love” (Sunday, Dec. 10th), Bill Paxton revealed that one of the items on his to-do list is a sequel to his 1996 blockbuster, “Twister.”

“I’ve had a meeting at the studio with Kathleen Kennedy about it,” Paxton said, whose inspiration for a sequel came as a result of a trip that he took to the Ozark Mountains last spring.

“I flew into St. Louis with my buddy Scott Thomson, who played Preacher in ‘Twister,’ and we rented a car and drove down to southeastern Missouri, into the Ozarks,” said Paxton. “We spent the night, and the next morning we got up and we started tracking the trail of the most famous tornado that ever hit the country, which was the Tri-State Tornado of 1925. It still holds all of the records. It was called the Tri-State because it was a mile wide when it came down from the sky on the afternoon of March 16, 1925, and it was a rural area, but, boy, before it was through, it crossed the Mississippi, it cut across southern Illinois, where it hit a lot of towns. The biggest one was Murphysboro, which was…it literally looked like Hiroshima after it hit. And then it went across the Wabash, into Indiana, staying on the ground three and a half hours and cutting a damage path 219 miles long, killing about 700 people. There’s actually footage that I found in Murphysboro at their historical society. They had footage from a biplane that the government sent down, just to do aerial footage of all of the destruction and the damage. So we just did that to kind of get some ideas, and from that I kind of extrapolated an idea for a sequel. And I kind of put that together into a format, and now we’re kind of waiting to see if that’s going to move forward. That would need Steven Spielberg’s blessing, ultimately, and they probably won’t take it to him ‘til there’s real studio interest, but I think the 3D applications of that could obviously be pretty amazing.

“The only reason I’d like to revisit that ground is because I realize we’re living in a time where big movies cost so much to make that the town is looking for built-in audiences,” admitted Paxton. “Of course, I’m so glad to see that the success of ‘Avatar’ is disproving that theory, but…I always thought the first ‘Twister’ was an exciting ride, but I thought a sequel could explore it in a more enthralling way, getting into more of the history and the lore, more of a darker version of the first one.”
Although it may sound more serious than the original “Twister,” Paxton doesn’t think that fans of the first film would have any problem accepting the sequel. “I think you’d still want to have a lot of the dark humor and all of that, with the flying cows and everything,” he said, with a laugh. “I think you could kind of intrigue people more by getting into a little more of the lore and really understanding. I just think there’s a lot more to explore there. When I researched the first film when I was getting ready to do it, I just found so much stuff. Ultimately, I was happy with ‘Twister,’ but I also had thought that it could’ve gotten a little deeper into it.”
What you do you think? I can’t say I’ve been chomping at the bit for “Twister 2,” but Paxton has proven in the past that he can make just about anything worth watching, and his point about how such a film would be perfect for 3D is certainly food for thought.

MUST make Twister 2. Wonder of Nature, BABY!
My Dad is a real moron. He thinks that Bill Paxton’s continued success on the HBO show, “Big Love”, isn’t worthy of being considered a job. After numerous Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominations, season 4 starting this year and an already contracted season 5, I guess this isn’t enough for my Dad. He’s so hard on Bill Paxton. I don’t know why.
I’d love to see Twister 2 in 3D. Loved the first one. Saw it when I was 12 and immediately proclaimed it my favorite movie of all time. LOL.
I LOVE Twister, and still consider it one of the most underrated popcorn movies ever. The reason it worked so well was NOT because of the amazing visuals(which were incredible) but the cast was good together. They was alot of chemistry between thw whole team and alot of hear that most blockbusters only have hints of. I never understood the hate this movie gets. Sure the science isn’t perfect but damn if isn’t fun and just and atleast attempts to show the dynamic of chasing tornados. I wanted to be a storm chaser after I saw this movie when I was 7. And i saw it at a drive-in theater(imagine how that went when that one scene happened).
“Twister” was lots of fun. I’d happily see a sequel.
If they let Bill Paxton direct it maybe. Frailty is a great film and he could do that darker side he was talking about.
Sure – I’d definitely go see Twister-2 even if it wasn’t in 3D. I still watch the original every time it comes on TV. Although there were some technical inaccuracies it’s still a damn good movie!
This is awesome… The interests have grown amazing for what we do in intercepting tornadoes.
The problem is.. there will be ann insane influx of people trying to see tornadoes in the plains… During the prime time for tornadoes… things could get a bit intense and dangerous for the veterans that really understand what is going on…
Who is doing the casting call.. Include me in the auditions.
Actually I have always thought a sequel to Twister was a good idea. It left off with a built in story line of them analyzing the data they collected, chasing more storms etc. To me Twister is somewhat like Jurrasic Park, in that I could watch a good movie about tornados or dinosaurs pretty much anytime a decent one gets made. It’s just awe inspiring to see things of that scale and distruction come to life. I miss Helen Hunt too!
bring back the extreme ! lol ha ha
bill paxton should speak to helen hunt and seymour hoffman … to get together for this one … it was an awesome movie …. i dont care wat people say about the special effects and green screens. like come on people it was a beggining of a new movie special effects world … someone should make this movie happen
thanks for ur time
Hopefully the sequel will be a little more scientifically accurate, but I’m all for a sequel. As long as Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Bill Paxton are in it, I’ll go watch it.
Did anyone notice that Bill Paxton got the date wrong for the Tri-State Tornado? It is March 18, 1925, not March 16!
There is a grassroots movement to name March 18 as Twister Day. Not only a day to watch Twister, but also to honor those that died in the Tri-State Tornado and bring some awareness to tornado safety for the upcoming severe storm season.
Someone, at least, please let Bill Paxton know that it happened on March 18!
i hope he figures out that they call it the Tri-state tornado because it cut across Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. He kinda missed the mark with that one.
It’s exciting for me any time Bill Paxton talks up a new movie project, because he’s wanted to direct a script of mine called “Doug & Dave” for quite a while, and anything that could help make that a reality is good news for me! “Frailty” was a really effectively creepy film, and “The Greatest Game Ever Played” was a real gem that was unjustly overlooked. And Bill’s just a great guy, period. My own selfish motives aside, I wish him the best of luck with anything he pursues!
Twister movies are great! You sit there safe and sound and watch everything blow away. Its no fun sitting there watching one come at your house and hopeing that it misses!
I love Twister! I also love Bill Paxton. Therefore I am ready to see Bill in another Twister movie!
IT HAS TO HAVE A DODGE RAM 2500 AGAIN!!!
Yes another Twister is just what we need. More enthralling chilling special effects and better looking twisters with more destructive force. Not to mention they could work on the story line this time unlike the first one.
Twister is my favorite movie, Respect The Wind is my favorite song, and the score album is my favorite CD, tied with One Life by 33Miles. I’ll track this idea and count down the days ’til it is released more than The Last Airbender.
i think a sequal is a great idea. i loved the first so if they did make a second i would prolly love it as well. i mean ever since that movie it has always gotten me into storm, well tornado chasing, and some career in meterology. even thought you dont really get paid much if any i have always wanted to do it. a second one would be both intriguing and another great adventure, even if we dont see more flying cows. O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A!!!!! lmaoo
um yeah Twister is my favorite movie ever!!! they need to make a part 2!!! i would be the happiest person on the earth!
I would love to see a new Twister movie in 3D it would be awesome in the 3D theaters and also on the new 3D TVS so please make a new Twister Movie in 3D it would be really a good movie.
I need a sequel. Twister is my favorite disaster movie. Hopefully someone will pick up the directing job. PLEASE MAKE A SEQUEL!!!!!!!!!!
Just checked in w/ Bill’s office, and there’s still no update. If you really want to make it happen, I’d continue spreading the word around the ‘net that there’s an interest.
I’ve had an idea for a Twister sequel ever since I saw the first one. They go to Disney World to celebrate their achievement and a tornado hits the park. It would be called “Twister 2: Flying Dumbo”
saw a repeat of RAchel Ray show, with Bill as a guest, partly talking about wanting a Twister sequel & he had a petition online….but haven’t been able to find anything. has anyone found it? I’ll sign it & send it to everyone I know!
I would love to see this happen, the first time i saw twister was when i was 5 and the movie made me want to be a tornado chaser, I still love the movie till this day and could watch it 5 times in a row and not get tired of it, i hope that this release would be possible because it would be an awesome sequel.
I’m definitely in for a sequel… bring it on!
Twister is my all time favorite movie and I’ve been waiting forever to hear of a sequel! Twister 2 in 3D would be amazing. A Dodge Ram in the movie is a must
I think Twister 2 would be an extremely good idea. The first movie came out when i was 4 years old and to this day i still watch it all the time. When your watching it you feel as if your out there chasing tornadoes from your living room.
Twister is still one of my all time favorite movies, i never get tired of watching it , i think Ive seen it at least 50 times since it came out . Would love to see the old team back together for a 3D twister adventure with a great story line , historical and modern day … love to see them throw in some of the new tech advances in twister research since Dorothy
) Come on spielberg ! get behind it !
there needs to be a a cotinuious run of new twisters
I would ADORE watching a Twister 2 in theaters! The first one came out when I was only 4… I loved it as a little girl. I say go for it, Bill! People love the movie. No matter what critics say, it’s a memorable flick. Simple fact.
