Last night’s season finale of “American Idol” had a bit of everything. It even had another somewhat surprising ending, at least from where I sit. Ryan Seacrest promised that there would be a few tributes to outbound Simon Cowell during the night, and there were. But here is how the rest of the show went down, and we’ll sum it up as quickly as we can:

The Season 9 Top 12 sang Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” and once we saw the school kids dressed like Alice Cooper we knew the man himself would make an appearance and he did. But he didn’t sound very good.

Last season’s champ, Kris Allen, sang his single “The Truth”…it was a B-plus performance

Then came the first of the Simon Cowell tributes, followed by Siobhan Magnus and Aaron Kelly doing The Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” during which the two living Bee Gees (Barry and Robin Gibb) came out and performed with them. That was cool, but they didn’t sound great either.

Michael Lynche came out and sang The Doobie Brothers’ “Takin’ It To the Streets,” and Michael McDonald joined him on stage. McDonald sounded great in spots, not so great in others.

Dane Cook did a tribute to Simon Cowell and I’ll say it again…this guy is absolutely not funny at all. He never is and I don’t get it!

Lacey Brown and Didi Benami started Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful” and were joined by the other women from this season, and then finally by Christina, who wound up finishing with a song by herself. Man, can that girl belt it. The finalists from this season had to be thinking, “holy crap.”

Then Lee and the other guys started a Hall & Oates medley and were joined by Daryl Hall and John Oates. Those guys sounded very good.

Then a quick check in with former contestants Janell Wheeler in Crystal’s hometown of Toledo and Matt Rogers in Lee’s hometown near Chicago.

Crystal came out and sang Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” and was joined by Alanis herself. That was pretty cool, but the two of them walking around nervously on stage was hard to watch.

Carrie Underwood sang her new single, “Undo It,” co-written by Carrie with judge Kara DioGuardi. I’m happy to report that we forwarded through this entire performance.

Then Kris Allen presented two custom-decorated Fords to both Lee and Crystal, and they could not have looked more unenthusiastic. Pretty funny stuff.

Then came one of the night’s great moments…..Casey James started strumming and singing Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” and I got chills as I knew what was coming….Bret Michaels. He got one of the biggest ovations of the night and rightly so, as the man battled for his life with a brain hemorrhage this past month. And he was just crowned the “Celebrity Apprentice” a few nights ago!

Then Lee Dewyze performed with the band Chicago to symbolize his roots. Yawn.

Another great moment in the show’s history followed, as General Larry Platt returned to sing “Pants on the Ground,” complete with dancers and a band. Even ol’ Larry could dance! He was joined by former contestant William Hung. Just heartwarming, I tell you.

Then Paula Abdul came out and did what looked like a comedy skit to pay tribute to Simon, but it just made me uncomfortable. How about you? I mean, that was beyond weird. After that, Kelly Clarkson and every American Idol champ except David Cook came out to sing together, and they were joined by other former contestants such as Justin Guarini, Diana DeGarmo, and Jason Castro. Then Simon joined them on stage and made a tearful goodbye speech that may have been rehearsed, but probably not.

Then Janet Jackson performed and was half singing, half lip-synching.

Finally it was time to announce the winner, who certainly would be Crystal, right? Well, no! It was Lee Dewyze, ladies and gentlemen. I admit I thought Lee really came on the last few weeks, and was peaking, but Crystal just annihilated him on Tuesday night. But, just like the last two seasons, the person we thought would win did not.

Still, Lee is a humble and worthy champion, and he was overcome by emotion because I’m pretty sure he didn’t think he would win. As Mrs. Mike pointed out, though, Crystal will now get to make an album the way she wants to, and Lee will have to make that co-written 19 Entertainment schlock. Mrs. Mike said this after throwing pillows at the TV!

Well, I said this morning that I thought Jermaine should be the first guy getting booted off “American Idol” but that nothing would surprise me. Still, I was kind of surprised by a couple of the results tonight. Here is how it all went down…..

First, the awful group number….a jazzy, horrible song I think called “American Boy.” Blech. Most of the contestants looked bored, lost, or indifferent. Yes, it was epic bad.

Then, right to the results. Ryan Seacrest had the ladies sit in two rows on the stage. Siobhan was first, safe…..Haeley Vaughn…safe. No!!!!! I was sure she’d be ticketed home, but was wrong. Maybe next week…Michelle D’Alamor (who?), safe….Katelyn Epperly, safe…..down to Katie Stevens and Janell Wheeler. Ryan asked Randy Jackson which one he thought would be going home and Randy chickened out, saying it was too close to call. Um, duh, Randy….not in this case. Katie was safe….see ya Janell! Then Janell sang that Heart song again and dare I say it sounded better than Tuesday.

Alison Iraheta, one of last year’s finalists, came out and sang her new single, “Scars,” and she reminded all of the girls on stage what real pipes sound like. Man, can that girl sing. But what was up with that dress with wings? I’m not the type to pay attention to fashion, but when big black wings knock me in the head, I do.

Next up, front row….Paige Miles, safe…..Lacey Brown, safe. Nooooo!!!!….Lilly Scott, safe….Crystal Bowersox, safe….so it was down to Ashley Rodriguez and Didi Benami……Ryan asked Ellen what advice she would give them, and Ellen said something nice and gracious about this not being the end of their journey. So then, Didi was safe, Ashley, going home. Ryan then asked her, like a jackass, “WELL, what do you think?” She looked mighty annoyed and replied, “WELL, I think I’m gonna sing a song.” Ha! That was awesome. But I have to say, Ashley is so full of herself, and she really has nothing about her that says she can be her own artist, only a Jordin Sparks wanna-be. So see ya!

Then it was on to the guys….Michael Lynche, safe….John Park, safe. Noooooo!!!!! (are you sensing a pattern here? The second one in the row is always a shocker)…..Aaron Kelly, safe…..Todrick Hall, safe (take that, judges)….down to Tim Urban and Joe Munoz. Ryan asked Kara what she thought, and she said neither of these guys deserved to be going home. Okay….here we go…Tim, safe..Joe, going home. Tim looks shocked, but not as shocked as the rest of America….still, Joe really wasn’t a star.

Ryan then made the announcement about the April 21 “Idol Gives Back” episode, and then had last year’s winner, Kris Allen, talk about his recent trip to Haiti. Then Kris performed a super cool version of The Beatles’ “Let It Be,” of which you can download on iTunes with all proceeds going to relief efforts in Haiti. But after hearing Kris sing, and after hearing Kris follow Alison, I have to say…..these two put on a freaking clinic in how to sing and perform to the dudes and girls this season….and really, none of them are as talented as these two. Tonight was proof of it.

Back to the results…Casey James, safe….Jermaine Sellers, safe. Noooooo!!!!!! (I told you)…….Lee Dewyze, safe….Andrew Garcia, safe….so down to Tyler Grady and Alex Lambert. Ryan asks Simon what he thinks, and Simon says, that based purely on vocals, he thought Tyler would be the one to go home. Drum roll…..Alex is safe, Tyler going home. Alex is shocked, even more shocked than Tim, and I don’t blame him. I thought for sure Simon was wrong. Anyway, this just goes to show, this is a SINGING COMPETITION. Of course, Tyler took a shot at the judges on his way out, saying they gave him the criticism he needed last night, instead of during Hollywood week. Ha, nice one Grady.

So there you go…..Janell, Ashley, Joe and Tyler, going home. We still have much work to do to whittle the rest down…and a couple more three-days-of-Idol weeks to get there.

Last night began the rounds of “American Idol” in which we as Americans have our turn to vote on the talent, and specifically which twelve contestants go home over the next three weeks, and which twelve make up the finalists. And what I saw last night was a case of the judges having done a bad job of delivering us talent. Because there weren’t many women who stood out from the twelve that performed on Tuesday, and yet the judges kept going on and on about how loaded this year’s crop is. Um, not really. At least not where the female contingent is concerned. Let’s recap what we saw, and let’s say that I agreed with almost everything Simon Cowell had to say….

THE GOOD

The best performer last night was Lilly Scott, the 20 year old from Denver who has been living out of her car and performing on the street to survive. Are you kidding me? How does someone like that not suck? Well, she didn’t suck, and she did a kickass version of The Beatles’ “Fixing a Hole.” It was mostly original, maybe a little Lily Allen-ish, but there is no denying Lilly’s talent as a singer. Ellen DeGeneres, making her live Idol debut, said “That’s what we’re talking about!” and that it was distinctive and Lilly had a great stage presence…..Simon said she was the best of the night so far (she went fourth) and that it was a good song choice, but that he didn’t see Lilly’s star potential just yet….Kara said it was believable and Lilly was at ease on stage, and Randy said he liked that Lilly came across as a true indie artist. I agree with all of that.

Katelyn Epperly, 19, was next and she did another Beatles’ song, “Oh Darling.” This girl can also sing her butt off, and I have to be honest…I didn’t know much about her at all before this, and that’s because I think the producers did a lousy job of showcasing the true talent in the auditions. Anyway, Simon said the performance was a bit messy but that it was a good song choice, and that he likes Katelyn….Kara said she knows her own voice well and it was a good choice…..Randy said she paid attention to tone and likes Katelyn’s look…and Ellen said that while it was hard to figure Katelyn out at first, she was interesting and strong, and has an amazing voice. Yes to all.

THE IN-BETWEEN

Paige Miles, 24, had the daunting task of going first, and you may remember she did a killer version of Stevie Wonder in her last audition before this. Well, Paige goes and chooses Free’s “All Right Now,” a classic rock and wedding band staple, and it sounded like a wedding band performance. But you could definitely hear her strong voice in there. Simon said he believes Paige has the best voice among the women, but that this was a wedding singer song (duh)….Kara said she disagreed and that she thought it was a brilliant performance (really Kara?)…..Randy said it wasn’t the right choice, but that Paige has a big voice…and Ellen said she knows it’s hard to go first and that she thought Paige sounded “fantastic” (really Ellen?). Look, it wasn’t horrible, but a really weird and bad song choice.

Michelle D’Alamor, 22….um, who? Hey, producers, seriously…who is this? Well, Michelle has a day job of being a corporate singer. That’s a fancy way of saying she sings in a cover band. She took on Alicia Keys’ “Fallin'” and it was not bad, but not great when you compare her to Alicia Keys. Ellen said it was fantastic, but she thought it may have been a bit safe and easy for Michelle….Simon said she did well but sounded like a professional singer, and that wasn’t exactly a compliment in this context….Kara said it was “mostly great,” and Randy said Michelle chose a tough song but that it was “pretty good.” Pretty much yes on all of that.

Didi Benami, 23, is originally from Knoxville and now waits tables in L.A. while pursuing a music career. You may remember Didi lost her best friend a few years ago and she continues to honor her pal. Didi did Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am” and it sounded, well, like Ingrid Michaelson with a few vocal runs. It was just too much like the original for my taste, but she isn’t bad. Simon said it was good but he felt there are too many contestants trying to sound like the original, and that means no creative spark. Amen Simon! But he thought Didi had a nice voice….Kara said it was a good choice and she liked that Didi made a few changes to the phrasing (yeah Kara, that was really impressive!)….Randy asked the question all of us were thinking, “Where is the star factor?” and then he used the word “sleepy.” Ouch…..Ellen thought that for her first performance, it wasn’t representative of what Didi can do.

Siobhan Magnus, 19, who is one of my dark horses (Simon even said so), is a glass blowing apprentice for her day job. Now that’s a day gig! Waitress? Boring. Glass blower? Awesome. Anyway, Siobhan chose a weird song for her, Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” Still, she pulled it off but they showed a clip of her also singing Stevie Wonder in Hollywood week, and this did not compare to that at all. Kara said she wouldn’t have picked the song for Siobhan but that she liked it….Randy wondered where her “big pipes” were….Ellen said she was “entertained” and Simon said “You are a funny little thing, aren’t you?” and then added that it wasn’t as good as the Stevie Wonder performance they all loved. Exactly.

Crystal Bowersox brought her guitar and did Alanis Morissette’s “Hand in My Pocket.” She has a good voice but this performance was just too Lilith Fair for me, and there wasn’t much original about it. Randy said he thought it was original, but that he didn’t like the song choice (huh?)….Ellen said she was a Crystal fan…..Simon said what I thought, that it was good but that there are thousands out there just like Crystal, a.k.a. a “soundalike,” but that he likes her…..and Kara said Crystal was good but not great and that it was “too coffeehouse.” Exactly.

Katie Stevens, 17, also chose a weird song for her, Michael Buble’s “Feeling Good.” It wasn’t bad but seriously…..this song? Ellen thought it was good but too conservative of a song choice, and that she wants to see Katie act her age….Simon agreed with Ellen and said the performance even started to be annoying….Kara said it was a bit pitchy and not like Katie, because she has a natural gift….and Randy said that she was pushing so hard that some notes were going sharp, and that the song was “too old” for Katie. Yep, pretty much, but she should be safe.

THE BAD

Will somebody tell me how Ashley Rodriguez made it this far? Ashley did Leona Lewis’ “Happy” and it was pretty bad and pitchy, and she was trying too hard to BE Leona Lewis. Kara said it was a big song to take on but had nice moments, not great moments….Randy said it was a good job but not great compared to the original….Ellen agreed with Randy and said that Ashley needs to step out and be different…Simon pulled no punches, saying it was clumsy, not a good arrangement and that Ashley is “going backwards” and could be in trouble with the voting this week. I totally am with Simon.

24 year old Janell Wheeler was next and she took on Heart’s “What About Love,” another extremely risky choice when you consider, as Kara pointed out, that Ann Wilson has one of the best voices in rock history. Add to the fact that Janell shouldn’t be here to begin with, and you have the recipe for disaster, which is what this performance was. Randy said it was not his favorite song choice, and that it just didn’t work….Ellen said she liked the choice and that Janell “mostly” sang well (really?)…..Simon said Janell gave 100% but delivered 65%….and Kara said it was way too big of a song. The only thing Janell has going for her, beside the fact that she dated Tim Tebow, is that there were a few performances that may have been worse.

Haeley Vaughn was one that I thought should not have made it this far as well, and she also made a weird song choice, The Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” Haeley had some harsh high notes, and I mean really harsh. Kara said it was technically all over the place but that Haeley was having fun…..Randy said she is unpredictable and had trouble with the high notes…..Ellen said she enjoyed it, but I’m not quite sure she was watching the same thing I was….and Simon said what most of us were thinking–that it was “verging on terrible,” and sounded like a wind-up doll. He then used the word “mess.” There you go. Now why did you guys let her get this far?

Lacey Brown, 24, made it almost this far last season, and this time had her chance to perform for America’s votes. Well, Lacey’s votes will be in direct proportion to the number of family members she has. She did Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” and it was pitchy and weird. Randy said it wasn’t the right choice, and he even used a Simon word–“terrible”…..Ellen said she thought Lacey was a better artist than what she showed last night….Simon called it “depressing” and “indulgent”…..and Kara said Lacey did not hit the high notes with ease. Um, what high notes are in that song?

So there you have it. This was not a great night for “American Idol” and I think the judges really screwed up by letting some of these women in. Of course, I don’t expect the really bad ones will still be there in a month. Of the four I thought were bad, I’m going with Haeley and Lacey to head home, with Ashley a distinct possibility as well. Janell will be safe based on her wine sales clients and the Florida football team voting for her. Tonight it’s the guys, and hopefully they will deliver a better collective performance than the ladies.

As Fox tries desperately to compete with NBC’s Winter Olympic coverage, they keep unveiling “first time in American Idol history” type stuff, which really is just a small break in format during Hollywood week.
But I’ll give them this…they are getting down to the final 24 quickly. Almost too quickly.

Last night’s two-hour episode began with the final 71 contestants being broken into three rooms. Two rooms would hold those advancing to the next round, and one room full of those heading home. This, after one final shot to impress the judges with a solo performance.

Since they showed bits and pieces of various performances in rapid-fire fashion, we’ll make comments the same way…..

28 year old Angela Martin, who has had the longest string of bad luck any of us has ever seen, was decent but notably shaky in her performance. Of course, her mom was reported missing, I believe right before Hollywood week began. You are not human if you don’t feel bad for Angela…..Casey James did Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly” and it was a super cool acoustic guitar version (though I personally can’t stand the song)….Jermaine did “Brick House,” and while it was one of the choices available, you have to wonder why dude chose the song played at every single American wedding…another Jermaine, Jermaine Sellers, did a decent version of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”….then 19 year old Siobhan, who we haven’t seen much of so far, did an amazing version of Stevie Wonder’s “Livin’ For the City.” Keep an eye on this girl….then guitar-wielding Crystal Bowersox did a pretty good version of Sheryl Crow’s “If it Makes You Happy.” Good but not great…..Alex Lambert broke out his ukelele and did a song that I hate more than “Bubbly,” Jason Mraz’ “I’m Yours.” It was okay, but I still hate the song….then big Michael Lynche also did the Jason Mraz tune, and he was okay but the version was not as good as Lambert’s….17 year old Thaddeus did an awesome version of “Man in the Mirror, much to the delight of his very animated mom…17 year old Charity Vance did “Gravity,” though I’m not sure whose song that is, and it was okay, as was Tasha Layton’s guitar version of Coldplay….Mary Powers, who for my money is way too cocky to make the final 24, was as cover bandy as ever….big Lloyd Thomas, after crying in front of the microphone for a while, did an okay version of “Man in the Mirror”….Brian, the police officer from Tennessee, didn’t do very well but was pleased with some sort of weird hand gesture Simon gave him….20 year old Hope Johnson did a not-very-good rendition of Daughtry’s “Home”….19 year old Shelby Dressel, who has that disorder that affects the nerves on one side of her mouth, chose Boston’s “More than a Feeling,” a very very odd choice both for her and for the producers who made it available, and it was just okay….Aaron Kelly, who forgot the words to Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel,” was still pretty good….Ashley Rodriguez did Jordin Sparks’ “Battlefield,” a curious choice because you then are going to be measured with an Idol champ, and it wasn’t that great….Then Lee Dewyze, Joe Munoz and Haeley Vaughn all went in very rapid-fire fashion, and were all just mediocre, at least in my book….finally there was Janell Wheeler, who was losing her voice during Hollywood week and struggled in her final showing before the judges.

So the contestants were then split into three rooms, and the judges met with them one by one. First, Room 1, and it was a yes for them. That room included Siobhan, Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens, Casey James and big Michael Lynche. Then Room 2, and they let Simon give this group the bad news that they were going home. This group included Mary Powers (thankfully), Brian the cop, Charity Vance, Lloyd Thomas and Hope Johnson. Finally, Room 3 was a yes, and this set included Ashley Rodriguez, Angela Martin and Shelby Dressel.

So after that, we were down from 71 to 46, as the 25 contestants in Room 2 were sent packing. But wait, there was more than an hour left in the show at this point. So they would begin the next round, which was meeting with each contestant, not in a conference room, but on a small stage in the middle of the Kodak Theatre “for the first time in American Idol history”…..so lame.

One by one, they were ushered to meet the judges by Ryan Seacrest, and the four judges would tell them individually if they had made it to the next round, which was the Final 24, the TV round in which America would do the voting.

First up, Michael Lynche, the dude whose wife had given birth to their first child at the start of Hollywood week. Simon said something about how he didn’t feel Michael believes in himself the way that the judges believe in him, but that the news was good–he was in the Top 24.

Didi Benami was next, and while none of us remember much about Didi, she also advanced. So did Catelyn, who I don’t remember much about and I can’t even picture her now, but I did write “eh” next to her name, so I don’t think I agreed with the choice.

Shelby Dressel was next and she was the first to be told she was going home. Too bad for her, but I have to believe part of the reason was that horrible song choice of “More Than a Feeling.”

Casey James made it to the Top 24, and Kara, who quite obviously has a crush on this dude, lifted one of her legs when hugging Casey, something Randy Jackson noticed and made fun of profusely afterward. Ha! 16 year old Aaron Kelly also made it through, because you always need a short, wimpy Kevin Covais or David Archuleta type….Lee Dewyze, who has a voice like (argh) Scott Stapp from Creed, also made it to the TV round, and I really have no idea why…..so did Todrick, who I think is the dude who sang alongside Fantasia in “The Color Purple.”

Finally, Jessica Furney was told she was going home, but then she unleashed a fury of begging and pleading that was, well, epic. This had to be a producer’s dream, as Jessica repeated over and over, “You have no idea what I can do.” Um, yes, Jessica, they do have an idea, because you just sang for them like four times. As Mrs. Mike pointed out, Jessica had the “crazy eyes” and started to get more and more belligerent with the judges, who simply told her their minds were made up and that was that.

So 7 of the final 24 have been announced with 17 more being chosen tonight–10 more girls and 7 more guys. I have to admit, I’m starting to get nervous for my favorite so far, Andrew Garcia. Seacrest made some comment about a “shocking elimination” and they even showed a dejected Garcia walking down the aisle at the Kodak in previews….please, tell me they didn’t let Lee Dweeby in and not my boy…please, don’t tell me that, because if you do, I’m going to go all Jessica Furney on you.

So that’s it everyone…after tonight we will have our Top 24, and the real competition will begin next Tuesday. Thanks for reading and see you all back here tomorrow….

Last night’s “American Idol” episode marked the start of Hollywood week, and it was our first glimpse at new judge Ellen DeGeneres, who took the place of Paula Abdul recently. The contestants were almost a sideshow to Ellen’s witty, hilarious banter, prompting at least one person (me) to not miss Paula one bit. Yeah, this season’s gonna be fun.

As for the 181 singers who made it to Hollywood and had to sing a cappella or with an instrument for the four judges, they would face “sudden death,” meaning move on to the next round or go home.
Talk about pressure. Here were the best and worst from last night…

THE BEST

Katie Stevens, who I don’t remember much of from the initial auditions, was awesome, but here is the problem–I didn’t write down what she sang last night and I don’t remember today….Andrew Garcia, who I had pegged as a serious contender a few weeks ago, did an acoustic guitar version of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” that was positively mind-numbing. The dude can sing his ass off, and he gave the song the ol’ David Cook treatment. Look out for him, because as I see it, he’s already set the bar really high for everyone else. Kara even used the word “genius” about the arrangement……Janell Wheeler was very good but I don’t remember what she sang either (sorry people, I must have been half asleep last night!)……Haeley Vaughn, who is amazingly just 16, did an awesome job with a guitar on her shoulder….Mary Towers and Ashley Rodriguez also made it to the next round, as did Lilly Scott, who did a cool take on Ella Fitzgerald with an acoustic guitar. Kara called Lilly “refreshing” and I agree completely….Michael, whose wife was having their first child as he was auditioning, made it to the next round. Should he have been with his wife? That’s a good question, but based on how talented Michael is, he may have made the right choice…..Tim Urban, who I wrote down “eh” next to, moved on, but for the life of me I don’t know what the judges see in him….Casey James, the dude who took his shirt off for Kara and Posh Spice, brought his guitar this time, and dude can PLAY as well as sing…..then the show closed with two awesome girls with guitars–Didi Benami, from Knoxville, who sang Kara’s song “Terrified” and did a stellar job with it. Even Simon admitted to liking the tune….and Crystal Bowersox, who did a cool acoustic version of “Natural Woman.”

THE WORST

Skiiboski, whose real name doesn’t really matter, and neither does the way we all try to spell it, was turned away, but not after Ellen’s hilarious comment, “You frighten me.” She went on to tell Skiiboski to tone down his act, that he intimidates his audience with the emoting…….country girl Vanessa, who flew on a plane for the first time ever to get to Hollywood, gets the award for poorest song choice ever, with Blind Melon’s “No Rain.” I mean, seriously? Blind Freaking Melon?……16 year old Megan Wright didn’t make it but I don’t remember what she sang….and neither did Amadeo DiRocco, the dude who they showed having dinner with his huge Italian family during the first audition. Dude just didn’t bring it this time (the performance, not the family)…..Jay Stone, the human beat box dude who reminded us all of Blake Lewis, apparently had too tired of an act for the judges to advance him….Justin Williams, who they did a story on the first time about him being a cancer survivor, didn’t do enough this time….and young Maddie Curtis also failed this part of the audition.

So that’s it….tonight they break into groups, which usually brings out the dysfunction in all of the contestants, and really separates the contenders from the also-rans.
