<p>Martin Scorsese is <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/161/martin-scorsese" target="_blank">profiled</a> in a recent feature in <em>Fast Company</em>. The in-depth article offers some insight into the way he makes movies and his respect for past filmmakers.</p>
<p>His latest film &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2011/hugo.htm" target="_blank">Hugo</a>&#8221; is not quite what you would expect from this great director. But it&#8217;s beautifully shot as you can see from the trailer above. Scorsese and the film were nominated for <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/15/us-criticschoice-idUSTRE7BE03F20111215" target="_blank">Hollywood&#8217;s Critics&#8217; Choice Awards</a> and the film received a <a href="http://carpetbagger.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/15/golden-globe-nominations-go-to-the-help-the-descendants-the-artist/" target="_blank">Golden Globe nomination</a> for best drama. We&#8217;ll see if he gets acknowledged this year at The Oscars.</p>

<p>The end of the year is upon us, and at this time everyone in Hollywood starts gearing up for the award shows. Who will be nominated and who will win? Everything culminates with the Oscars, but there are tons of other important awards as well. We just heard from the Golden Globes who announced their nominations. So far &#8220;The Artist&#8221; has been the huge hit that is generating the most buzz.</p>
<p>As these initial award shows release their nominations, we start to get a better idea of who might be nominated and then ultimately win the Academy Awards. But, of course there are always surprises. Predicting this stuff can be tricky.</p>
<p>Because of that, fans have a field day with office pools and other ways to guess who will be nominated and who will win. There are tons of websites now devoted simply to information and gossip of which film, which starlet and which director might get the final nod.</p>
<p>Stuff the the award shows fuel <a href="http://www.sportsinteraction.com/specials/entertainment-celebrity-betting-lines/" target="_blank">entertainment betting</a> which has become more and more popular. Everything in entertainment is fair game, from box office winners, <a href="http://www.thebratpacksite.com/news/the-outsiders-comes-to-blu-ray/" target="_blank">Blu-ray sales</a> to which song Madonna will lead with at the Super Bowl.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In a funny way, the most surprising thing about this year&#8217;s batch of Academy Award nominations was how strongly they stayed true to Oscar&#8217;s long-held habits &#8212; even a <a href="http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2011/01/the-83rd-annual-oscar-nominations-yo?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+uproxx%2Ffilmdrunk+%28Film+Drunk%29" target="_blank">Film Drunk</a> could see it this year. At least in terms of sheer numbers of nominations, the Academy was most generous to a historical/inspirational costume drama from England over a somewhat edgier and less traditionally fashioned tale ripped from today&#8217;s business headlines.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.http://screencrave.com/2009-01-28/the-past-vs-the-present-who-will-oscar-favor/"><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-33503" title="academy-awards" src="https://www.premiumhollywood.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/academy-awards.jpg" alt="academy-awards" width="477" height="271" /></a></p>
<p>&#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2010/the_kings_speech.htm" target="_blank">The King&#8217;s Speech</a>&#8221; led the nominations with 12, followed by &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2010/true_grit.htm" target="_blank">True Grit</a>&#8221; with 10, and just eight for &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2010/the_social_network.htm" target="_blank">The Social Network</a>&#8221; &#8212; still very much the front-runner in my opinion &#8212; and &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2010/inception.htm" target="_blank">Inception</a>.&#8221; Though <a href="http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/2011/01/25/oscar_nominations_led_by_kings_speech_with_12_winters_bone_makes_top_ten_ba/" target="_blank">Anne Thompson</a> sees the momentum shifting in a more royal direction, I think it&#8217;s a big mistake this time around to read too much into sheer quantity. For example, I would be surprised to see a huge number of non-&#8220;technical&#8221; awards for &#8220;True Grit&#8221; or &#8220;Inception.&#8221; (Roger Deakins&#8217; &#8220;True Grit&#8221; cinematography and the amazing effects of Christopher Nolan&#8217;s team being very likely winners).</p>
<p>Considering where most of the awards have gone so far, the only thing really going for &#8220;The King&#8217;s Speech&#8221; and against the previously prohibitive favorite, &#8220;The Social Network,&#8221; is aforementioned traditional Oscar genre prejudices and the inevitable backlash most highly acclaimed and award winnings films get. However, outside of <a href="http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2011/01/armond-white-makes-annette-bening-cry" target="_blank">infantile attention-hog critic Armond White</a>, I actually haven&#8217;t noticed a huge anti-&#8220;Network&#8221; backlash though there were some off-target feminist complaints. (A movie about an almost literal boys&#8217; club is going to depict a boys&#8217; club atmosphere.) In any case, the rather enormous and still ongoing on- and off-line backlashes against &#8220;American Beauty,&#8221; &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2005/crash.htm" target="_blank">Crash</a>&#8221; and &#8220;Titanic&#8221; clearly didn&#8217;t hurt those films&#8217; Oscar prospects one bit.</p>
<p><span id="more-33500"></span>What we do see this year is a general tendency, Hailee Steinfeld&#8217;s terrific and hugely popular performance notwithstanding, not to give too many nominations to actors who are under-30 &#8212; unless they are leading men. And so <a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/entertainers/james_franco.htm" target="_blank">James Franco</a> and Jessie Eisenberg were both nominated for Best Actor while the quietly remarkable work of Andrew Garfield was ignored in the &#8220;supporting&#8221; category, though he was arguably almost as much a lead as Eisenberg. (I guess there was never much shot for a surprise nomination for the flashier work of either Justin Timberlake or Armie Hammer.)</p>
<p>Though I dislike the term &#8220;snubs&#8221; &#8212; as if any movie has any particular right to a nomination from any given body in this hugely subjective and inherently unfair game &#8212; there were some interesting omissions. &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2010/the_town.htm" target="_blank">The Town</a>&#8221; got a supporting actor nod for Jeremy Renner, taking the slot that might have gone to a &#8220;Social Network&#8221; actor. That was it.</p>
<p>Also, I&#8217;m wondering if there was a prejudice against over-50 and/or less glamorous characters and actors this year. I&#8217;m personally a bit disappointed that <a href="https://www.premiumhollywood.com/2010/12/31/a-roundtable-chat-with-actress-lesley-manville-of-another-year/" target="_blank">Lesley Manville</a> wasn&#8217;t nominated for &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2010/another_year.htm" target="_blank">Another Year</a>,&#8221; though not really surprised. (Manville looks fantastic in person, but her character gets progressively more bedraggled in the course of the film.)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2010/another_year.htm" target="_blank"><img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="photo_right" src="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/review_images/2010/another_year/another_year_3.jpg" border="0" alt="Lesley Manville in " width="218" height="138" /></a>As per Anne Thompson, there was some silly arguing that Manville should have been in the supporting category. Considering Oscar&#8217;s history in this regards, it&#8217;s a massively silly argument and I won&#8217;t bore you examples but suffice it to say her character dominates the film, for better or worse. Also, as I&#8217;ve said repeatedly, it&#8217;s not unlikely that some people blamed her for playing someone who was as irritating as she is pitiable only too well. However, the Mike Leigh film generated yet another in a long list of screenplay Oscar nominations for the auteur (a very neat trick by Leigh, as his films are not  &#8220;written&#8221; in the usual sense of the word).</p>
<p>&#8220;Blue Valentine&#8221; and &#8220;Winter&#8217;s Bone&#8221; seem to be this year&#8217;s two token indies. Speaking of unglamorous actors, <a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/entertainers/paul_giamatti.htm" target="_blank">Paul Giamatti</a> was not nominated for his Golden Globe award-winning turn in &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2011/barneys_version.htm" target="_blank">Barney&#8217;s Version</a>.&#8221; On the other hand, Melissa Leo did get a well-deserved nod for her rather amazing (more amazing if you know her from elsewhere) work in &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2010/the_fighter.htm" target="_blank">The Fighter</a>,&#8221; a contender with six nominations.</p>
<p>The somewhat arty, hand-drawn, and more adult-oriented animated entry from Belgium, &#8220;The Illusionist,&#8221; was a wild-card nominee in the animation category over some very popular CGI animated comedies. However, if &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2010/toy_story_3.htm" target="_blank">Toy Story 3</a>&#8221; doesn&#8217;t win, I&#8217;ll eat Woody&#8217;s hat.</p>
<p>Another non-surprise surprise was the exclusion of this year&#8217;s most popular and one of its most acclaimed documentaries from that category. Anne Thompson mentions that &#8220;Waiting for Superman&#8221; director Davis Guggenheim has been under some fire for over-simplifying certain aspects of his story &#8212; a charge that seems to be leveled against almost every documentary to achieve any level of success. This happens every year with documentaries, it seems.</p>
<p>All in all, this is looking like one interesting and fun Oscar race. Only now I really have to see &#8220;<a href="http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/reviews_2010/127_hours.htm" target="_blank">127 Hours</a>&#8221; &#8212; along with all the Oscar pools, I should probably be running one myself on how little liquor bottles it&#8217;ll take me to get through the whole arm-sawing scene.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You&#8217;d think Jewish New Year and Labor Day coming so close together would slow down the pace of movie news a little, but leisure is for suckers and Yahweh is just another bit player in this hard luck town.</p>
<p>* The talk of the geek-o-sphere for some time is going to be the announcement of a massive and potentially trendsetting film/television cross-over adaptation of Stephen King&#8217;s multi-volume &#8220;The Dark Tower&#8221; mega-epic. Universal, which has had some very tough times lately, is taking what I&#8217;m guessing could be a make-it-or-break-it gamble on the project, the news of which was broken by <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2010/09/universal-lands-stephen-kings-the-dark-tower-and-plans-unprecedented-featurenetwork-tv-adaptation/">Mike Fleming</a> earlier.  I&#8217;m not a King reader, but I am intrigued by the fact that it&#8217;s a western-science fiction-horror cross-breed. In any case apparently the plan is to start with a movie, go to a 22 episode not-so-mini-series, and then onto another movie, another series, then wrapping it all up with movie. The idea being to provide fans with both the grandeur of theatrical films and the detail and time of a television series.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s intriguing but laden with potential pitfalls. One is that it demands an awful lot of time and people who aren&#8217;t following the series may feel shut out of the latter two movies. The other is that, quite frankly, I feel the &#8220;A Dangerous Mind&#8221; creative team of director Ron Howard and writer Akiva Goldsman &#8212; who I gather will be writing and directing the first two films and the entire first series at least, which could be some kind of record if that&#8217;s what&#8217;s really going to happen &#8212; simply haven&#8217;t indicated they&#8217;re up to this kind of material. I hate to say it but winning Oscars can be negative indicator sometimes.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not that I doubt their ability to crank it all out. Howard is obviously a very competent director who knows how to make highly professional material and I have tremendous respect for him as an individual and one of the more positive forces in Big Moviedom. However, he&#8217;s always shown a tendency to play it safe and often a bit dull when the chips are really down creatively as a director and none of Goldsman&#8217;s movies have been all that inspiring to me either. All I&#8217;m saying is that I had a good feeling about Peter Jackson taking on &#8220;The Lord of the Rings&#8221; and I have a bad feeling about it, though I&#8217;d seriously love to be wrong.  Something tells me this project needs a real lunatic and Ron Howard is one of the sanest guys in show business. Huge King fan <a href="http://www.aintitcool.com/node/46438">Quint at AICN</a> has similar misgivings. He has a more riding on this than I.</p>
<p>* <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2010/09/08/dont-trust-opening-weekends-kick-ass-wasnt-a-bomb-after-all/">Simon Abrams is right re: &#8220;Kick-Ass&#8221; doing a lot better than people assumed</a>. Even though I cover the weekend grosses here, we all make way too much of those openings and fail to look at the overall picture. Calling a movie a bomb that makes nearly half its budget in its opening weekend is just idiotic anyhow. The actual success of the film may have figured in the <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2010/09/lionsgate-spurns-latest-icahn-offer/">ongoing financial struggles between Lionsgate and Carl Icahn</a>.</p>

<p><span id="more-28369"></span>* If ever an actor was born to a play a hobbit, it&#8217;s Brit stand-by Martin Freeman. Despite tabloid stories to the contrary, he <a href="http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/09/08/hobbit-martin-freeman/">may be meeting his humanoid destiny</a> as young Bilbo after all.</p>
<p>* I love the idea of <a href="http://screencrave.com/2010-09-06/jan-de-bont-to-direct-zhang-ziyi-in-mulan/">Zhang Ziyi starring in a new film of the Mulan legend</a>. Jan De Boont directing in English, however, not so much.</p>
<p>* So <a href="http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/09/07/clint-eastwood-as-superman-or-james-bond-it-could-have-happened-he-says/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+The_Hero_Complex+%28The+Hero+Complex%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader">Clint Eastwood could have been Superman or James Bond</a>, which would never have worked in either case and he was smart enough to know it. On other hand, <a href="http://splashpage.mtv.com/2010/09/07/clint-eastwood-superman-namor-sub-mariner/">he liked the Submariner</a>. That almost could have worked. Almost. &#8220;Do you feel lucky, shark? Do ya&#8217;?&#8221;</p>
<p>* Oh, man more <a href="http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=33756">&#8220;The Man Who Killed Don Quixote&#8221; finance problems</a>. You&#8217;ve got to admire Terry Gilliams&#8217; fortitude.</p>
<p>* James Franco&#8217;s SNL documentary <a href="http://www.indiewire.com/article/its_saturday_night_for_oscilloscope/">has a distributor</a>.  Mr. Franco has also entered <a href="http://riskybusiness.hollywoodreporter.com/2010/09/05/telluride-brief-qa-with-127-hours-star-james-franco-covers-amputation-masturbation/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed:+thr/riskybusiness+%28The+Hollywood+Reporter+|+Risky+Business%29">TMI territory</a> promoting &#8220;127 Hours.&#8221; As for just how Aaron Ralston passed his time before he was forced to his drastic solution, I guess even in the greatest extremes, a young man&#8217;s fancy must be satisfied from time to time.</p>
<p>* Tell the folks at Big Hollywood &#8212; a new Ronald Reagan biopic is in the offing. <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2010/09/08/ronald-reagan-gets-a-big-screen-biopic/">Monica Bartyzel</a> has the details. I agree with her that Brandon Routh makes a lot of sense in terms of casting.</p>
<p>* Oh, and just because today is the start of the most solemn period on the Jewish calendar, Uwe Boll should go fuck himself. Twice.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not the kind of guy who gets easily offended and tend to think that no topic is too sacred for art and everything is fair game and, even when something doesn&#8217;t work and turns out badly, you can&#8217;t blame people for trying. However, even I have my limit and this no talent attention seeking mega-assclown has found it because he actually seems to know he has no talent and no taste and he makes a movie called &#8220;Auschwitz&#8221; anyway.  No links and absolutely no embed of the beneath contempt trailer. I hope I&#8217;m never forced to mention his film or him ever again.</p>
<p>* Just what we need in L.A. Another <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2010/09/apparition-cuts-staff-nears-tree-of-life-distribution-deal/">indie studio has fired most of its staff</a>.</p>
<p>* The Academy has apparently found Jean-Luc Godard and <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/09/movies/09arts-WAITGODARDJU_BRF.html">he might accept his award</a>. The sad part is that it won&#8217;t be televised so, sorry, Jean-Luc, there goes your chance to have your work exposed to countless young people who might never have heard of you before. I&#8217;m personally a bit angry that the Oscars no longer televise the lifetime achievement awards. I guess attention doesn&#8217;t have to paid, after all. Who cares about history or greatness? I don&#8217;t care if some people were bored by the old presentations. I really don&#8217;t. If movies bore you, why are you watching the Oscars?</p>
<p>* As a gorephobe who nevertheless made it through &#8220;Zombieland&#8221; with a certain amount of wincing, I am <a href="http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/21588">not thrilled that the sequel will be in 3D</a>.</p>
