TV Roundup: “Terminator: TSCC” canceled, “Scrubs” and “Chuck” news, and much more
- Fox released it’s fall schedule. “Dollhouse” was renewed and “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” wasn’t. President Kevin Reilly said it wasn’t an either/or situation, but that the bet on “Dollhouse” was a bet on its producer Joss Whedon. I want to hear from people who watched both shows — was “Dollhouse” better? Because “Terminator: TSCC” was damn good down the stretch. (On a side note, how long do you think it will take Summer Glau to find another role? Hint: Not long.)
- Fox prez Kevin Reilly is apparently a big fan of Tyler Labine (who plays Sock on “Reaper”). Labine is set to star in the comedy “Sons of Tuscon,” which debuts in January. Clearly, this is not good news for “Reaper” fans.
- Ponderously, ABC renewed “Scrubs,” which only plans to have Zach Braff for six episodes. What’s the point?
- NBC renewed “Chuck” for 13 episodes, but it came at a price. There were significant budget concessions, so fans might notice that parts of the supporting cast may disappear at times. I stopped watching early in the season because it was getting kind of silly (and that whole Chuck/Sarah dance was getting tiresome) — did it get significantly better down the stretch?
- According to creator Noah Hawley’s Twitter page, “The Unusuals” won’t be back for another season. However, CBS did renew “Cold Case” for another season.
- Fox has renewed “Bones” for not one, but two years, according to Variety.
- CBS picked up a Chris O’Donnell-led spinoff of “NCIS” which is going to “focus on undercover ops instead of forensics.” Wait, wasn’t that the premise of “The Unit”?
- If no one watches “Samantha Who?” and it gets canceled, does it make a sound? Juuuuust kidding. (Not about it being canceled.)
- “The Office” creators (and I’m talking about the original UK version), Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, inked a deal with HBO to produce an animated comedy based on their podcast about their unusual friend, Karl Pilkington, whom they seem to think is the most fascinating man in the world. (And coming from those two, that’s high praise.)

I’ve watched Dollhouse a few times, I don’t see how people can confuse this with good writing. I hate all the clumsy “literary” allusions, it’s just pretentious.
I’d much rather watch Sarah Connor Chronicles, though I don’t find Summer Glau all that appealing. Perhaps due to my advanced age, I prefer Lena Heady, though it may be more for her ass-kicking abilities. Summer Glau’s character can also kick ass, but she’s just a goofy robot.
I liked Reaper, but I don’t know what time it’s on this season, must be opposite Chuck. I love Chuck… or actually I love Yvonne Strahovski, with her ass-kicking yet vulnerable character.
Never liked Scrubs or Cold Case.
Yes, Chuck got significantly better down the stretch and I highly recommend it to anyone who may have given up on it. Or to anyone who hasn’t watched it yet. I am very happy to hear it has been renewed!
Sorry to hear that Terminator:TSCC isn’t coming back…it was an uneven second season, but it picked up towards the end. Maybe we’ll eventually get a TV movie to tie it up? Or a direct to DVD movie? At least we have Terminator:Salvation to look forward to.
It will be interesting to see who will be apart of the cast of “Scrubs” for next season. Neil Flynn, who plays the janitor, has been cast to play Patricia Heaton husband in a new fall show, Zach Braff and Bill Lawrence were schedule to leave the show.
Very sad to see that TSSC was dropped and the blah and weak Dollhouse was saved. I guess there just wasn’t enough skin in the promos for TSSC, maybe Summer should have been writhing around under a silk sheet too? It can’t be because of the story or acting. The two shows are the entertainment difference between prime rib and a plain hamburger.
Lowest common denominator I guess.
I’m mostly just annoyed that Fox dropped “TSSC” in favor of wringing another season out of “‘Til Death.” I refuse to believe that the ratings for “Dollhouse” will be improved by pairing it with shows that its core audience would almost certainly never watch.
Serials usually shed viewers in the second season, not add them. Unless the second half of this season was must-see TV and it gets some buzz via word of mouth, I don’t see how the numbers for “Dollhouse” are suddenly going to spike.
“dollhouse” over TSCC?
Gimme a flipping break fox, and rot in %ell forever dollhouse!!! !!! !!! !!! !!!, and you too you for that matter you worthless poser utter thief of good scifi ideas that you truly are whedon!!!
Terminator story line and character development is 10 times better than dollhouse.
Dollhouse is just a friday night T&A show. There are only so many revealing outfits to put Eliza Dushku in before everyone will get bored.
Dollhouse was a decent concept for a tv movie, but where do you go from here? she’s a high-tech hooker victim, they’re the evil pimp, blah, blah. and the finale was just sadistic.
terminator wasn’t much better. I mean, we know how it turns out. they can’t get the kid or the movies don’t happen.
chuck should stay. clever, light and fun.
What were they thinking? Terminator was so much better than Dollhouse and the end of TSCC second season was really action packed
The first 2 episodes of Dollhouse were nothing to write home about. It got much, much better as it went on. Joss has a hit! Eliza Dushku is amazing at creating multiple characters.
As for TSSC…it was flat out boring at first…someone convinced me to give it another try and it had gotten better, but I’ll live without it.
Chuck also gets better and better. Season 2 had a couple of great episodes. The best were involving Chevy Chase and Scott Bakula. The finale is a great cliff hanger. The entire cast is perfect for the show. This needs more promotion!
I loved Samantha Who! Great cast. I bought the First Season on DVD and quickly became a fan. I hope ABC realizes they made a mistake and brings it back.
Sadly, Donna, that’s just not going to happen. My understanding is that it came down to an issue of whether or not the producers were willing to accept a significant budget cut to keep the series on the air…and they simply weren’t. Better to lose the show when it was still working well than to have the quality drop because they can’t afford to maintain the same standards.
NO ONE else is the world watched The Unusuals, did they? A simply amazing show… Real and witty and emotional, but no one ever watched it… go to abc.com right now and watch the episodes, then you’ll realize what you missed out on, and be just as disappointed as I am…
i LOVE the unusuals. its sad to see a good drama/comedy go so early in its stage. it has so much potential and they arent giving it any chance to flourish. who airs a pilot at 10pm? i cant believe a show like this gets canceled but CSI miami is on full rotation.
@Lauren and Andre
I guess that makes three of us who watched the show. I gushed about it to everyone I know, but most people either weren’t interested in “another cop show” (despite being told that it was anything but), or had watched an episode or two and just weren’t interested. It seems like Fox has some competition in the Who Can Cancel The Most Promising Shows As Quickly As Possible contest.
Dollhouse is an incredible show, I couldn’t stand more than two episodes of Sarah Connor Chronicles. If you don’t believe me take a look at the season finale that Whedon originally wanted to have on the air. The network refused saying it was too dark, but it’s all the proof I need to put my money on DH.
I’m really going to miss Samantha Who? and would much rather have seen it’s return instead of Scrubs – there’s no point when they’re getting rid of 3 of the characters – one of them that is the centre of the whole show.
I’m disappointed Unusuals didn’t stick. It was really witty, interesting with good acting and great characters that it was easy to attach myself to. I hate how shows that try to take a different angle on something get cancelled while we get another spin off (NCIS: LA? My god x.x) and CSI: Miami keeps going despite the fact that its shit on a stick as far as T.V’s concerned. Goodbye Unusuals, Life on Mars, Pushing Daisies… Hello crappy spin-offs and generic cop/forensic/medical dramas. Which are all the same as the last. -sigh-
Me i liked the Terminator Salvation movie . Non stop Action !!! Yes the story is not very elaborated but the action scenes are perfect for me !! If you like special effects this movie is for you !!!
A very cool and powerful Terminator site :

I really liked the Unusuals. I like the crime mystery shtick which is also why I like Bones and NCIS. But really don’t need a NCIS spinoff Glad Chuck is coming back for another season. Why couldn’t they cancel CSI:Miami it blows. Sad to see TSCC cancelled it was better than Dollhouse but i admit I will still watch Dollhouse.
