10 Vampire Films That Should Be Made In The Wake Of The Success of “Twilight”
“Twilight” is shaping up to be a full-fledged film phenomenon…and whenever there’s a phenomenon, you can count on Hollywood trying to reproduce it quickly and in sub-par fashion, so prepare for a huge glut of new vampire-themed movies in the very near future.
The good news in this case, however, is that there’s a lot of great source material out there already, so let’s hope at least a few of the suits have good taste when it comes to buying up the rights to adapt certain books to film form…but since we have a really bad feeling that they don’t, we figured we’d throw a few suggestions their way for vampire flicks we’d like to see made. And, yes, we know that our #1 pick isn’t a book, but it’s so far ahead of the pack when it comes to the must-make vampire movies that we put it there, anyway.
(P.S. The movie adaptation of Darren Shan’s “Cirque de Freak” is finished and due for release in February 2009, or else it’d be on this list for sure.)
10. “Bloodsucking Fiends,” by Christopher Moore. Not only is this a solid mixture of horror and humor, focusing on a hot young redhead who moves to San Francisco, is promptly bitten by a vampire, and has to learn to adapt to her new lifestyle, but it already has a sequel ready to roll. Better yet, it’s called “You Suck”!
9. “Fevre Dream,” by George R.R. Martin. Are you kidding? I’m a fan of pretty much anything written by the guy who created the “Wild Cards” series, but this novel about vampires on a steamboat has earned reviews which feature the phrase “Bram Stoker meets Mark Twain,” which is high praise by most people’s standards.
8. “Lost Souls,” by Poppy Z. Brite. Maybe it’s just because I enjoy pretty much any film revolving around a band, but I’d love to see the adventures of Lost Souls? make it to the big screen.
7. “Jonathan Barrett, Gentleman Vampire,” by P.N. Elrod. It’s set during the American Revolution, with Barrett on the side of the British. Surely the success of HBO’s “John Adams” has made history cool again, and what better way to make it even cooler than to add vampires to it?
6. “Riley Jensen, Guardian,” by Keri Arthur. A half-vampire, half-werewolf in Australia who works for Melbourne’s Directorate of Other Races. “Underworld” meets “Torchwood,” anyone? I’m sold already.
5. “Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter,” by Laurell K. Hamilton. It’s already got a huge fan base between the sixteen novels and various comic books, but for those who don’t know Ms. Baker, she can re-animate the dead, licensed vampire hunter/executioner, and she has a lot of sex. I’m simplifying, of course, but, hey, it got your attention, didn’t it?
4. “They Thirst,” by Robert R. McCammon. The dastardly Prince Vulkan, master of the vampires, is hell bent on taking over Los Angeles as part of his quest to transform the entire population of the planet into the undead. Their opposition? A police captain, a comedian, a reporter, a junior high school student, and a Catholic priest who’s a former heroin addict and has just been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
3. “Carrion Comfort,” by Dan Simmons. Actually, this is such an epic tale that it might warrant a full-fledged mini-series rather than just a film.
2. “Vampire Academy,” by Richelle Mead. Rose Hathaway is a half-vampire / half-human teenager who’s simultaneously finishing high school and training to fight evil vampires determined to destroy the Moroi vampire race, a.k.a. the good vampires. Bonus superhero-ish aspect: each Moroi can control an element, either fire, earth, water, air, or – on rare occasions – spirit. There are two other books in the saga, with a fourth set for release next year. Surely someone has already started work on a script, because it seems tailor-made for a film.
1. “Angel.” Come on, Joss, you and I both know that the time couldn’t be more right. The kids love the vampires, and although David Boreanaz is on his fourth season of “Bones” and has now officially escaped permanent typecasting, he ain’t getting any younger, so if he’s going to play the immortal undead, it’s time to make your move and make an “Angel” movie. In fact, while you’re at it, you might as well go ahead and make it a big ol’ epic that incorporates “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” as well. We’re really excited about “Dollhouse,” Mr. Whedon, but, c’mon, it’s Fox. Your schedule will be free and clear within a few weeks of its premiere, so let’s go ahead and get this ball rolling right now.

It might have been slight, but I enjoyed Julie Kenner’s “Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom” as well.
Wow, I’m clearly not up to date on the vampire literature. The George RR Martin one sure sounds fun though — though it must be said that Twain was an immensely better author than Mr. Stoker. All I got from reading “Dracula” was how much everyone talked about loving their friends during Victorian times. I’m all for love, but these cats never shut up about it. (Also, if you catch Guy Maddin’s Dracula-ballet film, which is actually pretty entertaining, he got caught up on this undercurrent of xenophobia in Stoker’s work.)
Anyhow, I’m definitely with you on the “Angel” movie, even if it really doesn’t seem to be any more in the cards than another “Firefly” movie. In any case, they really do need to do it. It’s not only David B. who ain’t getting any younger — he was but a child when he started on “Buffy.” James Marsters is now downright middle-aged and I can’t see doing an “Angel” movie without Spike and I can’t figure out how they’re going to cover-up or explain middle-aged looks in an eternally young vampire. (Some kind of vampire illness perhaps?)
What about the Historian? My God that is a better piece of literature than anything else on this list and it involves a modern day take on Dracula…tremendous book…
I’m with you on the vampire academy book! It should be turned into a movie! The books are so interesting and seem so much like they should be made into a film. So hopefully someone will work on a script for this book and we will see it turned into a movie!
I am also with you on the Vampire Academy series. They are great books, and i believe they will make great movies. So i hope someone will by the rights to make a movie and we will see one soon.
I also very much hope that the Vampire Academy series hits the big screen…it is one of my favorites next to the Twilight saga. I might also suggest the Vampire Diaries & moving on to witches…The Secret Circle series should both be made into movies…
I would absolutely go see “angel” if it were made into a movie with most of the original cast, but I would prefer that Buffy & some of that cast be added as well…
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone write a script for the Vampire Academy…it is an amazing series so far…I ABSOLUTELY cannot wait for the fourth book & would go nuts about a movie! I believe that with Twilight’s success thus far, the Vampire Academy movie would do GREAT!!!
It is always fun to see the characters brought to life & given a face…fun to see if it matches what you imagine while reading the story.
I agree, I would love to see Vampire Academy made into a movie. As for Angel, well I just loved Angel the series But lets face it David B is way to aged to pull it off now so lets leave that where it is.
I am a great fan of Anita Blake and would really love to see that series made into movies.
With the success of Twilight I think Vampire Lovers are in for a treat.
I would totally love it if Vampire Acadamy was made into a movie
that book series is my all time favorite. It would be awesome to see all of the charicters come to life:)
I have every one of those books on my bookshelf and think your list is pretty well-rounded. One I would have added is Of Saints and Shadows by Christopher Golden.
I adore the Vampire Academy books, and I own every season of Buffy and Angel, plus the original Buffy movie that started it all. I somehow don’t think that they could make a good adaptation of Angel into a movie though. I mean, would he fight off an apocalypse in a couple of hours or something? Besides, I’m pretty sure that it’s implied that he died at the end of Angel, Season 5, along with pretty much everyone else in the city.
I think we all pretty much agree that “Vampire Academy” should be made into a movie. The series is amazing. It involves action and romance. But it’s not exactly a “Twilight” romance, but still and amazing series.
I would love to see the characters in Vampire Academy series come to life! I love the books a lot. They are by far my most favourite vampire books. Even better than Twilight which is based purely on romance. Please, someone please make it into a movie! I’ll bring my whole group of friends to watch and promote them! I’m sure after the movie is out, it will earn a lot!
WOOOO! VAMPIRE ACADEMY SHOULD BE A MOVIE!
I LOVEE THE BOOK & I’D GO SEE IT!
THEY JUST NEED TO PICK THE RIGHT PEOPLE!
I HOPE THEY MAKE IT INTO A MOVIE!! =D
IT’D BE A GREAT MOVIE (I HOPE)
Since Twilight is so popular with teenagers, now would be the perfect time to make the Vampire Academy series into a movie since it also stars teenagers. It could also attract more males than Twilight since there is more action and excitement.
Actually, rumor is that The CW is turning Vampire Academy into a series.
Jason Zingale: I got so happy about what you said and did a little research to find that the CW is turning Vampire Diaries into a series. =( But I guess that’s good because Vampire Academy seems to be more film-based.
Whoops, sorry. I heard about it a while ago, so I must have gotten the two mixed up.
I would totally love for “Vampire Academy” to be turnes into a movie, buyt they’d have ot get it right. They would have to do better than “Twilight’ though, it wasw ag reat movie but the books were way better. So yeah hopefully it does get turned into a great movie, and they should do what they did for “Twilight” and try and get fresh faces as the lead roles.
What about House of Night by P.C. and Kristin Cast?
There about vampyres as well!!! and they’re my favorites!
I think they are amazing! and the rights to a movie have already been optioned! WHOO!
Although! I do love Vampire Academy!
I Loved the Twighlight movie, but I think that a good variety of different Vampire movies is good because they all have there own story. I personally just read Vampire Acaedmy and I think it would make and exciting movie because it relates to some things that teens go through like peer pressure, gossip etc.. Vampire Academy would be great!!!!!
i think vampire academy are the most amazing books!!!(even just better then twilght) man i want it to go to a movie!!! god, i think i would burst with happiness! to see everyone on screen!!! With the right actors and script it could get FAMOUS

ben barnes for dimitri
(fingers crossed, waiting and hoping for movie)
i believe that Vampire Acadamy book so 100% be made into a movie. i lovveeee itt!!!!
I love the story . it would be perfect for movies.
i have to say that i think they might be better than the twilight books.
if they do decide to make into a movie than i hope they do a better job than wat the did with twilight. i wasnt a fan of the movies so fingerscrossed that if they do make a vampire acadamy book , than it will be fabulous .
I do hope that the Vampire Academy books get transformed into a movie and/or show. I am a big fan of them, having read all of them twice. I can’t wait for the next two to come out so I can read them a whole bunch of times, too. I am so in love with Dimitri and Adrian’s a hottie, too, without a doubt. I loved the fact that Rose and Dimitri finally “hooked up” in the end, but my best friend and I cried once finding out about Dimitri having been turning into a Strigoi. I don’t know. Maybe Richelle Mead will bend her own rules and bring him back to life…or maybe Rose will end up having a big battle with him in the last book and she kills him or something. Either way, I’m shedding lots and lots of tears.
i haqve seen twilight like 10000000000 times and i will have to say that it is a great movie… but i think Vampire Acadmey will be even better than twilight… sorry to say that but, its more realisic than twilight… Vampire Acadmey is more of a high school based movie and alot of people would be more fansinated with that movie… i cant wait for that movie to come out…
OH.MY.GOD.
the vampire academy was the best book i’ve ever read!!!
it even made me cry!!!
i’ve never cryed over a book before!!!
i looooooved it!!!
i read the whole series twice in a week!!!
it a romance and an action sorta movie, i thick i might actually like it more then twilight!!!
i have a stack of books in my room all about vampires!!!
i was trying to see if there was a book that was better then the Vampire Academy series…
there isn’t!!!
I would seriously freak if they made a movie out of Vampire Academy. It has romance, action, and suspense, which is more than Twilight can say, so I think it’d be more popular. I LOVE that series. I love Dimitri, so when he got turned into Stigoi, I started bawling and nearly through the book across the room. (My friends had the same response.) And as my friend put it, “It was just after they finally screwed each other!” I’d probably watch it about five times in theaters if it was ever made into a movie, no lie. =]
oh god they have to make a movie of Vampire Academy!I could say it was better than Twilight(no offense Twilight fans).I just love the spin in the story and the totally hot characters(yeah especially Dimitri and Christian and Adrian) xD It made me cry and laugh and all that stuff.OH GOODNESS!It would be so frickin amazing to see those oh-so-awesome characters come to life(I would suggest Ben Bares as Dimitri xD)!The best one I’ve read so far.And just to make another suggestion of a book(which I think was good) I’d like to suggest How To Marry A Millionaire Vampire by Kerrelyn Sparks and House of Night series(Marked,Chosen,Betrayed,Untamed,Hunted and Tempted) by PC + Kristin Cast.Verrrryyyyy awesome books.*sighs* I love reading. ;D
Omg Hello Vampire academy is amazing! Rose Hathaway is well wicked! My rooms stacked with every vampire book possible.
if u like vampire academy and Marked then i suggest Cold Bloods!!
VAMPIRE ACADEMY IS BETTER THEN TWILIGHT EVEN THOUGH I LOVE THAT ONE TWO. N DONT ACT CHEAP WITH THIS MOVIE EITHER!!!!!!!!! IT IS WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don’t leave out the Dark Hunters, based on books by best selling author Sherrilyn Kenyon. If you have not read them, then you’re missing the good stuff! She leads the pack folks!
oh man, that would be so awesome if would make all these movies.
I totally in love with twilight and the vampires, and Vampire academy could be more succsesful even than twilight saga.
Team vamps ;D
I’m soo excited for the Anita Blake movie i love the books but on the description you put her name as Ms. Baker not Ms. Blake and it kind of annoys me. I’m really looking forward to seeing who they are casting and i can’t wait to see it
Vampire Academy! That was the best book ever!
OOOH YEAH
Vampire Academy is AMAZING but Twilight is still ten times better (:
haha
if you love vampire academy like I do, check out the Vampire Beach series by Alex Duval and….this is my fovorite series right now….The House of Night series by P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast. Both are about vampires and should be made into movies. The first book in the House of Night(HON)series is hunted then betrayed, chosen, untamed, and hunted just came out and I devoured it in one day. Cant wait for the next book Tempted!!!!
sry i ment the first book is marked
i also think that the dark hunter series by sherrilyn kenyon and the sookie stackhouse series by charlaine harris should be made into movies
I think it’s fair to say that the Sookie Stackhouse series is pretty well covered on TV at the moment, but a feature film in the future certainly isn’t an impossibility.
Actually, I am working on a script for Vampire Academy, I was thinking it’d be a cool project. (I do sort animated films wit Sims 2 and I right scripts frequently) It’s not done yet, but I think it will make an amazing movie.
O I luv sims 2!! Sims 3 isnt better though and I was kind of dissapointed with it. What have you done so far with the animated films so far?
it would b soooo awasome if they made vampire academy into a movie i would totally go c it
I think that Vampire Beach should come out with a movie….. The Twilight series and Vampire Beach Series are the best books that any one could ever come out with an i really didn’t like to read and that’s the God Honest truth until i read the twilight and Vampire Beach series…. the best book series ever made about vampires
yes they should do all those! i think should make after midnight and the vampire who loves me by teresa medeiros
I think House of Night should be there. That’s about about vampires. That’s as amazing as Twilight so is vampire Academy. I’m glad vampire academy is on there i love the books and can’t wait till bloood promise comes out!!
I agree with Vampire Academy, I would love to see that as a movie if they got things right! Also a good one would be House Of Night by P.C and Kristin Cast. I know there were talks of a movie, but it would be great to see HON as a movie aswell.
Oh My Gawd!!! No, you guys have no idea how much greater Vampire Academy would be than twilight. I am seriously freaking out. Im so confused. And people are spoiling it for me by telling me Dimitri turns to be a strigoi!!! Im gonna cry. This book has everything though! Action, Suspense, Romance, Comedy, and maybe put in a little Horror and lets not forget the DRAMA! Omg, No it would be soooo much better, the BEST movie. Screw Harry Potter, Screw Twilight, Buffy? HA! This one will top those with no doubt in my mind! Please please please make one soon!
And, I did read betrayed by the House of Night series. Good book. Should be read.
What about “Jessica’s guide to dating on the dark side” by Beth Fantaskey. This was awesome and I would also love to see more by Beth.
I must say that I also agree re the Vampire Academy – I’ve actually just finished reading it today and loved it. Rose, Lissa, Dimitri & Christian are definitely characters that I’d love to see up on the big screen.
And I also agree about PC Cast etc and the “House of Night” series. Have only read “Marked” so far and it was fantastic. Others on schedule for reading. I hope the powers that be hear our desire for Vampire Academy.
Vampire Academy all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i would love to see this made into a film!
Vampire Academy!! PLEASE! i would love to have this series been made into a movie, inspiring, moving and it definitely is one of the best novels i’ve read among most of it!! I’m reading the 4th book now…can’t wait for the other books to come out! =] i swear it’s just as good even better than TWILIGHT:L
V A M P I R E A C A D E M Y ! ! Dimitri is SO hot! :L , sadly gone to waste!:L
Ok, vampire books/series that need to be made into movies:
-Vampire Academy
-Vampire Kisses
-House of night series
-Chronicles of Vladimire Todd
These would be AMAZING movies!!!!!
i have read all the books and cant wait until the the new book comes out in the vampire academy it would be the best i could buy the movie as well so my kid could see what i been talking about they dont like to read as much as i do but they like to watch movies
The books of the vampire academy should become and movie!! My step mom has read all of them and she said they were amazing. Therefore I dont like to read so i would love to see them as a movie… i hear they r very good!
The book series Vampire academy really needs to become a movie, i would love to see the charaitors that i enjoyed so much up on the big screen, the books are awsome so why not make them a movie.
Vampire Academy definitley should be made into a movie. I would see it the day it came out
Also, I agree Vampire Academy is 20 times better than the twilight saga
i think Vampire Academy because its really popular and its sounds really awsome if they would turn it into a movie…
and i would go and see the movie, and the books would get more popular like twilight
Vampire Academy NEEDS to come out as a movie!! Those books are my absolute favorite, i can never put them down!! I love them!
They Thirst should be made…now…special effects would be great for this movie!
i think the vampire academy book should be turned into a movie!!!!!!!!!i mean ya the twilight series is good but the fucked up the series with the movies. the caharters need to be perfect if they want the movie to succed. my friend leslie read frost bite for a project (she did not like to read book before that ) and now she is addicted to the series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
many of my friends say ima nerd cuz i read alot but with books like the vampire academy out in the world how could i not read things like that
