After a few slow weeks threatened to ruin everything that Carlton Cuse and Co. worked so hard to build to this year, “Lost” returned from its month-long break with both guns literally blazing. Tonight’s episode wasn’t particularly revealing, but it did feature more action than I’ve seen in an entire season, and if this is any indication of how a “Lost” movie might turn out, count me in. Of course, the fact that I enjoyed it so much while simultaneously battling an unexpected sickness speaks volumes of just how good it really was, and while I’d usually follow that up with a play-by-play breakdown of the episode, I’ve decided to take the easier route by pointing out some of my favorite moments:
- Sawyer’s Vietnam moment was equally enjoyable. It had bullet-ridden redshirts, picnic décor-turned-battle shields, and even a rocket launcher. Now we know where all that extra money from the strike went. - Not to be upstaged by a bunch of Army men, Ben called upon the powers of the Black Smoke Monster to open up a can of SFX-powered whoop-ass. It’s been a while since Smokey last showed his amorphous face, but boy was it awesome. - Not only is Ben a Jedi Master when it comes to mind games, but he’s apparently pretty handy with a retractable baton as well. Kudos to Michael Emerson for channeling his inner Neo, but now I want more. - Ben used Desmond’s boat to get off the island? Fair enough, but then where the hell is Desmond? Hmm… maybe he’s on the island with Penny. - We already knew that Sayid was a card-carrying member of the Dharma Assassin Death Squad (DADS), but the fact that Ben tricked him into thinking it was his idea really tickles us. - Emerson is the king of the intimidating one-liner, but when he told Charles Widmore that he was going to track down his daughter (Penelope) and kill her, well, I couldn’t help but cheer him on. Could he really have been a good guy all this time? - “That’s not what he said.” Bernard knows morse code? Ruh-roh, a certain paranoid physicist is in trouble…

- The expression on Sawyer’s face when Ben handed him the shotgun was priceless. He went from “Holy shit, Ben’s going to shoot me” to “Holy shit, Ben’s my ally” in a matter of milliseconds.

I’m confused. Ben asked the hotel lady the date(Oct.21,2005) and you automaticlly think its a flashback. He then turns to the tv and sees Sayid on the news. The background voiceover says “Oceanic Six”. Flashforward??? What the frak is going on?
It was always a flashforward from the beginning.
You have to remember that even though it’s been four years in TV time, it’s only been a few months in island time. It’s still 2004 (or maybe early 2005).
“He changed the rules”….with that line, I began to think that whatever we’ve seen before is nothing compared to what we’re about to see. I loved last night’s episode and it gave me a lot to think about…
- Seeing Jack dip into his medicine to battle this stomach problem right away got me to thinking that this is the starting point where Jack gets addicted to pain-killers, and he will evolve into the man we see in the flash-forwards
- Faherty saying “time…is relative” points to more clues that there is some kind of time displacement going on around the island and time is moving more slowly/more quickly on the island.
- Ben saying he got off the island in Desmond’s boat sounded good to Sayid, but how did that boat take Ben to the Sahara Desert and leave him there wounded as it was nowhere to be found once Ben came to? How did Ben get into the middle of the desert?
- Oh my God! They killed Alex?!? You bastards! Actually….the way Ben was frozen after seeing her get killed was creepy. Once he snapped out of it, I thought he was running away into his secret compartment…
- But wait! There’s a secret compartment inside his secret compartment?!?!? And from the looks of it, Ben controls the smoke monster?!?!
Thinking about the people the smoke monster has tormented in the past:
The pilot –> makes sense for Ben to send the monster after him since he is the only one who may provide a clue to the survivors where they crashed and Ben doesn’t want them to know.
Locke –> the monster was dragging him away and Locke wanted to go with it, but Ben probably wanted to take Locke at that time because Ben knows Locke shares a connection with the island.
Mr. Eko –> this one has me stumped…Why would Ben send the smoke monster out to kill Eko?
- The lighting in the final scene with Ben and Charles was perfect! Only the left side of Ben’s face was lit and only the right side of Charles’ face was lit. Put together both sides and you have a ying-yang mix….good and evil, if you will. Who is good and who is evil?
- Finally, Charles’ line that “the island always was mine and it will be mine again”. Okay, so he is the head of the Dharma Initiative and he controlled the island while his people worked there and now he wants it back. But (and maybe I’ve seen Highlander too many times) what if Charles meant it was his for all time and he has been around for centuries hiding the island? Time is relative when it comes to events on the island and Charles may keep on returning there wery so often to re-charge his batteries, so to speak. (Okay, so there’s a little Batman there too, with the Ra’s Al Ghoul sortylines). Maybe this is why Charles wants it back so badly? So he won’t die? Which made me think back to him bidding on and winning the auction for the journal of the Black Rock….maybe he was the Captain of that ship and he just wanted his journal back? After all, he seemed he would not be outbid on it…
…Okay, maybe I’m putting too much though into everything, but to me that’s part of the enjoyment of the show.
“Ben used Desmond’s boat to get off the island? Fair enough, but then where the hell is Desmond? Hmm… maybe he’s on the island with Penny.”
That’s what he said, but I think he was lying. He ended up in the middle of the desert, which looked a lot like the spot where the redheaded scientist found the polar bear remains. Maybe there’s some sort of a portal between the island and that spot.
Also, I’m not so sure Ben “controls” the smoke monster as much as he’s able to summon it. That part was a little fuzzy.
Ben went into the ancient room (the markings on the wall) with a clean shirt. After he came out, his shirt was covered in ash. Has anyone determined a time frame as to when Ben said “he changed the rules” on the island to the meeting with Charles. Could the island have something like a worm hole and transport Ben instantly wherever he wants. Another thing to think about– Charles used to have the island, so shouldn’t he know where it is? unless the location of the island is constantly changing.
