I’m not surprised, of course, but nor am I any less sorry about it. CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler just released the following statement: “The March 25th episode of Jericho will be the series finale. Without question, there are passionate viewers watching this program; we simply wish there were more. We thank an engaged and spirited fan base for keeping the show alive this long, and an outstanding team of producers, cast and crew that went through creative hoops to deliver a compelling, high quality second season. We have no regrets bringing the show back for a second try. We listened to our viewers, gave the series an opportunity to grow, and the producers put a great story on the screen. We’re proud of everyone’s efforts.” Clearly, the fact that I stopped blogging the show had absolutely no effect on its low ratings, but I still feel bad about it. (It was one of those situations where circumstances prevented me from blogging one week, and it just snowballed.) These episodes of Season 2 were consistently strong, powerful, and packed with both plot development and action, but, ultimately, if America would rather watch lesser programming, that’s their choice. It’s the wrong choice, of course, but you know what Doris Day sang: “Que Sera, Sera.” Do I think the Sci-Fi Network will consider picking it up for a third season? No, not really. I mean, I’d love it if they did, but when a show has been rescued from oblivion once and still can’t get its ratings up, you’re clearly dealing with a situation that isn’t going to be remedied by moving the program to another network. But at least you can’t say the series didn’t go out the same way it began: with a bang. CBS wanted Jericho to fail. Every time it was on, they stuck it on the same night as American Idol, and I think it was even at the same time during the first season. What the heck do they expect? Nothing can compete with American Idol. At least the track they took with the second season will bring “closure” to the storyline. You rock, Jericho! BOO to CBS.
I just finished watching the first season and the first three episodes of season 2 (it’s been on the harddrive for a while, and i have read all of your blogs, thanks for those btw). I think that if CBS had started doing the outside world stuff a bit sooner than the second season things may have been better. as it is the 2 episodes of season 2 i have watched have been great and i cant wait to watch the last four.
Ben
btw, does anyone have news about season 4 of the unit.
Ben,
No word on “The Unit” yet, and that probably isn’t good. I’d really be bummed if it didn’t come back.
Well, i just finished watching season 2 of the show and i talked to a friend about the way season one ramped up quickly about 3/4th of the way through the season and how season 2 was nonstop action with jericho and the world it found itself in. the conclusion that we came to regarding how long it took to get to the “good stuff” was that we didnt know the people of Jericho. While it may have taken a long time to learn about them the stories would not have had the same impact without knowing the characters (like hectors death in the unit s3.
Hopefully Sci-Fi or the CW is serious about trying to pick up the show since i think that they could be a great show for either channel (i was reading that it would be the highest rated for both channels)
well, just my $0.02
Ben
The problem with Jericho is that I loved watching it, and I loved mocking it. I think the story was fantastic but whoever wrote the dialogue must have came right from the Soap’s. I’ll miss this show but it also leaves me wondering, under more capable hands, would this show have been as good as Lost or Battlestar Galactica? Could be.
