“Poltergeist.” “Psycho.” “Dawn of the Dead.” “The Shining.” When people start talking about the best all-time horror movies, these are some of the names that start getting thrown around. They all made Bullz-Eye.com’s list, along with some classic baddies like Jason, Freddy, Leatherface and Michael Meyers. But do “Jaws” and “Alien” belong on a list like this? Sure, they both scared the hell out of me, but when I think “horror movie,” I think “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” not “Jaws.”

I totally dissagree with you on your top 15 horror movies.
Jaws doesn’t belong in the catagory, it’s more of a action film, than horror.
I also would take out the Blair witch project, a very dumb movie that moves too much.
One I would add to your list that I believe is one of the scariest and creepiest of all time is The evil dead.
Dave, if Jaws doesn’t belong, what do you think about Alien?
The Evil Dead is a good call.
No doubt that Jaws and Alien do not fit the traditional mold of a horror flick. It all depends on how you define it. Frankly, seeing Jaws when I was a kid scared the living hell out of me, probably more than any flick other than the Exorcist.
Another cool horro flick for fans of the genre is April Fool’s Day. It’s a cheesy 80’s slasher flick but it’s done well.
Another movie I like in this genre would be Reanimator.
I liked the original “Amityville Horror” and, growing up, “House” scared the crap out of me.
No way should The Bore Witch Project be in the list. One of the dullest flicks ever, only scary perhaps if you went into it thinking it was real. I had read about it a month before it came out in Rolling Stone and thought it sounded interesting. How wrong I was. Some of the shittiest “dialogue” to ever hit the screen (a series of “fuck yous” ad nauseam doesn’t count as “acting” no matter who you are), plus zero scares amounted to the entire audience I was in booing at the screen when it was all over, and laughing at it while the movie was playing. The Last Broadcazst, the movie that came out first and that BWP stole a ton from, is infinitely better (although Stefan Avalos’ followup, The Ghosts of Edendale is a steaming pile of shit almost as bad as BWP).
It’s cool that you listed a few newer films; The Ring, and Dawn of the Dead (if you’re including the newer release in that catagorey, as you have the date listed)… but definitely not the Blair Witch. It’d make for a decent episode of the Travel Channel’s “Haunted America” or something, at best. One newer film that I thought was decently scarey was Darkness. Just slip that in the Blair Witch’s slot.
Blair Witch scared a lot of people who didn’t know it wasn’t real when it first opened. Of course, it lost its effect on most people once its secret was leaked.
I was taken to task by a guy for including The Ring, if you can believe that. But he was 19, and didn’t have much reverence for the classics. Also, he put Saw on his list, which is a deeply disturbing movie, but it ain’t horror. That’s a thriller, so it’s excluded, just like Se7en was.
And for the record, I hate typiing Se7en. the movie was Seven when it came out, and it’s Seven on my (hilariously old school, double sided) DVD. Still, it’s Seven, not Se7en.
I love Evil Dead, but it didn’t scare me. Some creepy elements to it, but it didn’t put the fear of God in me the way Exorcist, Omen and Poltergeist did.
Evil Dead is a good call, should have made the top-15 “at least” (How many tree-rape scenes have you ever seen). But who can forget the larger budget but extreemly scary Silence of the Lambs, and Misery. Just as people will never swim in the ocean the same way after Jaws; people will never eat fava beans or drink Chianti the same way. Who will forget the “hobbling” of Jimmy Caan by Kathy Bates, I can’t even listen to Liberace (not like I would have anyway), without thinking of her bizarre fasination with the freak.
And although I really liked the movie Alien (and yes it is “Gothic-Horror”), I am much more impressed with “Aliens”. Another movie that doesn’t get it’s due is the original “Creepshow”, although it is prety campy at times, there are some good scares and frights in the movie (who can forget the roaches bursting out of E.G. Marshall in “their creeping up on you”).
the very fact ring is number 5 and not even the japanese version means the whole list is wrong. Halloween should be number 1 and if you really found the exorcist scary then you must be a girl
The ring at any number for that matter, but at number 5. Who’s in charge here. the ring is higher than the texas chainsaw massacre. That’s a pretty big problem. fuck you for making this list. I’m sorry but fuck you. check out “The Changeling”. Blair witch might deserve to be on another list , maybe top 100 or 50. not top 25. The ring as the fifth greatest horror movie. may god have mercy on your soul. look at the movies you put this hollywood teaser ahead of. Your nuts buddy, nuts.
“fuck you for making this list. I’m sorry but fuck you.”
Wow, strong reaction for something as trivial as a list of horror movies. I love how some people have such a hard time accepting that others have opinions that differ from theirs.
Justin, come back when you learn how to play nice with others.
How can a list of the Best Horror Movies of All Time be produced without “Rosemary’s Baby?” This was the first of the Modern Horror Movie (”Psycho” is very dated, by contrast). And as scary movies go, “Rosemary’s Baby” is a very still and quiet movie. I guess it’s truly more creepy than scary, but it definitely belongs on the list.
I believe an Honorable Mention case can be made for “Don’t Look Now” with Donald Sutherland and Faye Dunaway.
And I like the idea that the author(s) thought outside the box and included “Jaws” and “Alien,” even though they are not typically thought of as horror movies.
However, if we’re going to include “Jaws” and “Alien,” we must include Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, “A Clockwork Orange.” That disturbing movie lies somewhere between science fiction, horror, and quasi-morality play. Ask anyone who’s seen it. It is perhaps the most disturbing movie ever made. After I saw it the first time, I didn’t sleep well for a week. Thus, it is, among many other things, a great horror movie.
In our defense, we put together this list two years ago…
